that is 16 (I am 18) and he wants to try the hookah. The problem is is that im not letting him get into tobacco or nicotine and im a lawful person. What im wondering is, is using an herbal shisha (soex for example) legal for people under 18 in the USA? Since it is not tobacco or anything illegal and my second question is (just because i think me and my brother could bond if we were non-regualrly smoking herbal hookah together) would smoking herbal shisha be bad for him cause hes 16. I couldnt find any laws on smoking non-tobacco products, if someone could help me it would be great. i live in Maine if that helps for laws

Metro Pizza here in Portland serves herbal. This is a quote from their website.

New Herbal Shisha contains no tobacco,
tar or nicotine and is therefore safe for
all ages. Our policy is to serve herbal shisha
to those 16 years of age or older only.

You have to be 21 or older to even smoke tobacco in their lounge at this point since they've been busted a lot for letting minors smoke. Edited by Ralleac

My gf's rents let her 16 year old brother smoke with us, hell they always let there 11 year old take one puff just to try the flavors usually.... I should also add that her rent's smoke with us all the time. You may wanna check on State Law's, for instance her in Texas parents can legally buy drinks for there kids in restraunts and give it to them. There may be a similar law for tobacco....

yea i loved being in texas when my dad handed me a nice cold blue moon ale when i was 17 and all the waiter said is "as long as i dont hand it to him we are o.k."

As far as I have ever heard or read, if its not tobacco, and the stuff itself isn't illgal, you can smoke it any time you want. But why would you start your brother on a bad habit like smoking ANYTHING? It's not good for his health. Period.

My high school just produced a play in which there would be smoking in it. Most of the students are indeed underage and no tobacco is allowed on school grounds. Herbal cigarettes were used in this case. So the fact that the principal was ok with underage kids smoking Herbs on school grounds must mean, at least in Minnesota, herbal smoking can be done by people under 18.

I would let him smoke if your parents don't care. Honestly he can be doing things a lot worst then smoking hookah. None of his friends have a hookah? I would honestly be surprised if he has never smoked it before. Look at it from his point of view. He sees you doing it and your only two years older then him which isn't a big difference at all. I smoked before I was 18 the first time and so has almost everyone else I know.

But ultimately the decision lies on you. My sister is almost 16 and I won't let her smoke. My parents think I am a bad example and whenever she even jokingly mentions wanting to smoke I get lectured about how I am being a bad example. And if I do let her smoke I know she will use it to extort me someday.

same here man, it sucks. i get lectured on being a bad example.. when my siblings have never showed a desire to smoke.

When I was in High School I smoked cigs at 16 and the cops saw me and asked my age and they said that as long as I didnt buy them its all good. But as for the morality of this. Meh I got no problems with it. Some laws are odd anyway. I understand why they say that your supposed to be of age to smoke and thats because of body systems still developing. I just think there could be better laws than being 18 to smoke hookah. Like making people be evaulated before being able to have children. That would make the world a lot better.

What about a parent smoking with a 16 year old son/daughter, a question to pose if anyone knows.

From and English Perspective...

It *could* be seen as a form of child abuse. Allowing a child to smoke in, or around, the house *could* be seen as approval and as such encouragement of Smoking.

It HAS been used as evidence against parents when there are OTHER issues surrounding child safety. To my knowledge it's never been used as a sole reason to remove/place children on the 'At Risk Register'.

Having said all that it's bloody irresponsible to encourage children to smoke - We all know that it's habit forming on one level or the other. [1]

JD

[1] - Caveat. It's irrisponsible in the Western cultures. Other's smoking is a more integral part of life. Edited by Johnny_D

Meh, I'm sorry JD but in my opinion England has a lot of ridiculous laws. And just plain too many laws, registrars, lists about everything.

I went to HS in Naperville IL from 1980 to 1983. We had a smoking lounge because it was better then letting us smoke in the bathrooms. There was a guy out there that kept an eye on us, the snitch or nark of course was his name but he was cool.
Good points SC

I will still let my children take a few pulls if they want too. Better with me then someone else IMO

Well, I Lit it up real nice so he could get some nice few hits/drags off of it and really just have a good first experience. Since he only wanted a few of them hes done now and Im currently still puffing on it. He said he loved it alot. Funny though he acted like me before I was about to smoke out of one for the first time. He was afraid of it being harsh and of coughing alot from it. Haha his first hit/drag was small but had some smoke, and i said "breathe in until you can no longer breathe" so he did and exhaled a huge cloud for his second hit/drag and then he says "Wow! i didnt even feel it". He takes a few more, attempts to do smoke rings (which i still cannot do and i want to learn! but dont know where to start) and says that hes done. That was really cool, Im glad he got to do it.

that was like my first time.. my first time i had no clue what i was doing and my first hit wasnt actually a hit.. i purged it tongue.gif then i took a small one and passed to my friend who took 3 huge ones and passed it back. then i tried taking a huge hit and loved it.. then the rest was history

no way! i always wondered why the servers/owners tell everyone not to blow... i guess it's not as obvious as it seems.
seriously though I don't even remember my first time. went with some lady friends for a hookah and a chat. but my first sessions left me so chill. i miss that.

Before you automatically decide not to introduce him to regular shisha I'd find out one very important question: Is he already sneaking cigarettes with his friends? At 16 most people are. If he is, then the best thing you could possibly do for him (in lieu of him not smoking at all) is to make him a deal that he can smoke with you under the condition that he leaves those alone. Not the best solution of course, but one whole hell of a lot better than him smoking cigarettes.

wow at Texas...thats screwed up

can't believe a principle allowed smoking lol

It's not all that screwed up when ya think about it, take Germany for example, those kids grow up drinking beer and research shows that they are 75% less likely to abuse alcohol because of that fact. If they allowed drinking at an earlier age kids would be less likely to try and get there hands on it and abuse it. I personally have been having drinks handed to me by my Dad since I was 13 and I'm 21 now, I knew my limits before I went to my first high school party and that wasn't a bad thing, I also can go months without having a drink and it's no big deal, case in point introducing alcohol at an earlier age is probably better for most children. Now if only they would do the same thing with other illegal substances in the US, if they legalize things kids will be less likely to want it because there no danger in getting it and such and all kids are looking for is that rush....
