Screen ?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a screen. I have no idea how to use it.  How do you make sure than there is air leak.  When I put the screen on top of the tobacco, too much air goes in.  It feels like someone ripped the foil if it was used instead of making little holes.
Anyone with a description or pictures for this?

Welcome to the land of big smoke and heavy air flow!
You are gonna be doing hits like never before, so kiss your lungs goodbye...
but seriously, thats what smoking with a screen is like. How big is your bowl in relation to your screen? My screen fits exactly over the top of my bowl, no over hang, so the tabs hang over the edge. Also how DEEP is your bowl?
You are going to have to relearn your heat management. Kinda like when you started smoking using foil. Ma'asells that require more heat with the foil will do so as well with a screen.
If You are hitting too hard for you to handle comfortably, do the unthinkable and pack your ma'asell down in the bowl a little, this will restrict your air flow like small holes in a screen. I'd suggest experimenting with a bowl, packing and repacking it until you get a flow rate you like.
I'll post some pictures if you want when I get home...

*phew* that's SHALLOW! I guess you'll have to keep the flanges bent out instead of down to fit on the bowl. I'd say use just a LITTLE heat to start out, build up slowly until you get good smoke...
be prepared to burn a bowl or two and I suggest finding a deeper bowl.
I'll try to find the post wiht the pictures of screen and bowl set up.

Well, its not supposed to really be airtight is it? I mean even the foil just lays on/around the bowl really. The foil just keeps your charcoal off your tobacco and generally controls your air flow. You can do the same with packing your tobacco a little tighter if you need to restrict the flow for some reason...
But yes, as always, it comes down to personal preference...

Here's something for y'all.....

You'll notice on the screen one tab is longer than the others.

Leave that one unbent, flat. Turn the other tabs just down so the
screen stays on the bowl. No need to wrap those legs around the bowl to
pry them off later?

The long tab is your frying pan handle.

Just make it so you can lift the thing off with that tab once it cools from the coals you took off.

I don't mind the screen at all, it works well with 2 quick-lites or a
couple short fingers. Coverage is key here, but that's adjustable.

I've always gotten better smokes from foil though.
Each bowl type is an experiment for perfection.
