Recent Bandwith Problems.

Recommended Posts

Not sure whats going on and Adrock is out of town for a few days.

I've Invisibled all the videoes in the video section to see if thats causing the problem. If we get the same error tonight we'll know its something else. Please bear with me.

That should take care of the problem. Video uses alot more bandwidth than text.

depends
i havnt been here in a while but most places that host video are like youtube, and link to that site
that would be youtubes bandwith not yours

That's my fear - But it's worth a shot. I think *some* of the videos might be hosted on our server. And we have a shit load of guests browsing - worth a shot I feel.

ok..spoke with adrock. He's moving the Forum to a dedicated server tonight. We should have more than twice the capacity tomorrow. At that point I'll restore the videos and we'll see what happens. Apparently Adrock has been shelling out cash for extra bandwith when we've needed it so this is a good investment. He also said he was working on some other improvements.

More news as it happens.....

I was gonna say that with all the new members and guests that are here are generating a lot of cpu usage on the server causing the problem. Same thing happened to me and a friend running a site. Dedicated server is going to be the only way to keep HF going. I think you should put up a donate button or peoples start becoming a premium member and show your support and the help to keep HF going. For videos, make sure they are not hosted here on the server if you do not want them. You Tube embeds are not going to effect HF's bandwidth.

Is he staying with the same server? Could be some time involved in switching data base to another server. Make sure it is all backed up....... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Maybe using a youtube code based videosection will help us out?

our video section IS youtube based. But I imagine since it is streaming THROUGH the forum it's probably ating up some bandwith.

If you want to donate to the forum you can get a $15 premium membership.

hmm, not so sure about that. But then again it depends on how the server scripts are setup. I thought most websites just link to youtube, so the scripts gets your web browser to stream the video directly off youtube. Its very similar to the way html can directly call resources, such as pictures, sounds, scripts from any number of servers into your web browser. But like I said, it depends on how the website is setup. Maybe you'd like to talk to your webmaster about this.

heh..i didn't understand a word of that..I can run the place, but i sure as hell don't understand the inner workings... huh.gif

As far as I'm concerned computers run on smoke..when the smoke gets out, it stops working. Works for cars and major appliences as well...

Hotlinking to places such as photobucket should be ok. When I am at the office I cannot see sigs and/or pics as it blocks photobucket but not hookahforum - Proof that it loads directly from photobucket biggrin.gif

Actually, Adrock says the bandwith isn't spiking. It's just the use has generally gone up recently. So it could just be the increased traffic in general. Either way the place didn't die last night so I am restoring the video section.
