sensae
I know we're already swamped to our eyes in tangiers threads, but I'm having problems with it and have already read at least 30 threads on it.I'm using a Tangiers Small Phunnel and loading about 25-30 grams of tobacco into it, using the foil-push-down method that Eric told me to (He's been helping me some over the phone). I've got Orange Soda, and let it acclimate for about 36 hours. I got a single decently good bowl out of it, but the majority of my experiences have resulted in harsh nastiness. I'm using two 1/4th sticks of Exoticas. The flavor is decent, and I'm pretty sure it's acclimated fine, but even my decently good bowl resulted in the infamous tickle. I've heard talk of "tangiers doesn't have to smoke harshly" blahblahblah so I know I must be doing something wrong. If needed, I can post some pictures.Edit: Great, I can't change the thread name now. A mod care to help? It was supposed to read THREAD. Drums13182
harshness usually means too much heat.mabye less heat..use like an 8th of a stick of exoticas on each side
sensae
I've tried moving down to a single quarter. The smoke gets really thin and is still harsh as sin.
Hookah_Bob3
The trick with tangiers is not to have the heat concentrated in one area..You want a decent bit of heat but spread as evenly across the bowl as possible
sensae
I've split my quarters into eighths. The smoke's a little smoother, but still a damn tickle. The tickle doesn't seem to get worse or better with more or less heat, either. The thickness of the smoke just changes.Edit: Also, I'm using three eighths, and a tiny, tiny piece in the center. mdl
Post some photos of the packed bowl before you start smoking next time.
sensae
Alright. Do you guys usually have it touching the foil?
CouchKing
I was in the same boat for a long time. My problem was that I wasnt packing the bowl enough. I basically just acclimated for 30+ hours, stirred it, packed bowl to the top, then packed atleast 10g more into the bowl until I couldnt fit anymore in it. Worked perfectly.. now I'm just trying to get the "amazing flavorful sessions" everyones talking about.
sensae
Hm.. I packed even more in, I probably have like 35 grams in. When I'm done with the bowl, I'll get a scale and check it.Edit: Yes, my guess was right. Edited May 1, 2008 by sensae
Bulldog_916
Acclimate LONGER, bigger holes. Sometimes it takes forever to acclimate, as long as 24 hours, in my first case, more.

sensae
It was already acclimating for at least 36 hours, but I'll let it sit out all day today and try again tonight if I feel fine. I'm using the skewer on my tongs to poke holes, maybe I should try a small fork I have. I'll post pictures when I do attempt it again.
Stuie
Canon packed Tangiers very loose in a hemi bowl last night at my place...absolutely no problems, smoked great!
cymptom
I'd say try using Three Kings or Golden Canaries. With Three Kings and a phunnel, use four 33 mm halves or three 40 mm halves. With Canaries, use four whole.

speel
Did you spin 3 times, jump once , lick a toad, and say let their be hookah session? If you didn't there is your problem.
SimplexCoda
Ok more holes. More tobacco, less fluffy. You say your puttin in about 35g of tobacco in the bowl. The small phunnel holds aprox 50g of tobacco.
thecoalition
perhaps its the 36 hours of acclimation....thats ridiculously overkilled acclimation time.i acclime 4 or 6 hours tops.
sensae
In the pictures, the tobacco isn't fluffed up at all, it's the same as it is in the container. Also, 50 grams?! I'm not sure I could force 50 grams into the thing if I packed it as dense as it could go. Eric told me I should be putting about 25 grams in. I'll try it with my next session I guess. sensae
QUOTE (thecoalition @ May 3 2008, 05:31 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>perhaps its the 36 hours of acclimation....thats ridiculously overkilled acclimation time.i acclime 4 or 6 hours tops.It took that long to get smoking well. I tried a bowl after 6 and it was horrible. Now it actually smells like orange soda. This is an old batch of Orange Soda, BTW.
mattathayde
is it totaly harsh or just a little? i remember the orange soda i had a few months ago at the local lounge had a little tickle and almost had like a powdery feel in the back of my throat even though nothing was there, hard to explain-matt
sensae
I've had it almost smooth as air before, which I can handle and just put up with, but it's usually -really- harsh. I can't take a puff without coughing.
mattathayde
i really havent gotten to play around with tangiers yet but a thought, pack it as tightly as you are but leave a little more room under the foil, maybe?-matt
sensae
I've tried that. I've tried underpacking it. I've tried overpacking (in my mind) it. This is my latest attempt using Snoop's videos.
