The second is purging the chamber of harsh smoke. You blow into the hose softly and the ball valve in the exhaust gives.

3lemental
That's awesome!!! I love the storage spot for the hose. A couple of questions; is the bowl interchangable (i.e. is a a standard bowl fitting inside the copper sphere-ish thing that you can put any bowl you like on?), and same with the hose, can you change it or is it fixed? Legitimately the best thing i've seen this year!! I want one!
MaddMatt
You can put any bowl on it but the glass funnel is small enough to fit with the dust cover on over it.

rahl071
Definitely. If nothing else, can you list me what materials you used? like, pipe choice, etc? It'd be one of those things that I'd live to build myself and customize.

If nothing else, can you list me what materials you used? like, pipe choice, etc? It'd be one of those things that I'd live to build myself and customize.
I've been asked this a few times since I've posted this. All of my brass/copper and fittings I pulled out of heaps at the recycling center in my town. Other parts from antique stores. The only items I bought "new" was the glass tube (vase from michaels), the hose (moon smoke shop) and the glass bowl (medusa hookah lounge). I have boxes and boxes of antique componants, fittings, handles, knobs, gears, cranks, etc. I try to make most of my steampunk art out of antiques. The best way to keep the real look is to use old parts. Some parts of the hookah have been soldered together. It comes apart in to 5 main pieces for easy cleaning. The glass tube. Upper assembly, lower assembly, bowl assembly, and base. The mouthpiece I machined on a lathe at work. The brass globes are bedknobs I found at a flea market. It's really just comes down to scrounging and trying to find the right components to follow the theme.
delSol_si
thanks for the pics and vid, i still don't quite get how it works, but its cool nonetheless. at first, i was surprised you are selling this, but then again, the novelty would probably wear off after awhile, plus you can make another anyway. im anxious to see how this does on eBay. The Russian
So, I currently own 4 hookahs, two of which are completely retired due to lack of performance. Rather than allow them to collect dust, I'm starting on a mod project partially inspired by my steampunk worship. My hope is to make an incredibly durable hookah that will be festival friendly while incorporating some Victorian-era ideas (i.e. they used to show each other scientific inventions after dinner while entertaining guests). I really liked what the previous poster had done as far as making theirs from scratch, but I'd really just like to revive some old hookahs. For the bowl, I want to go with clear double Pyrex and somehow illuminate it (any ideas?). As far as the ashtray goes, I'd like to etch brass and support that with the original ashcatcher that came with the piece (and spraypaint it brass, which I'm pretty sure Rusto sells). My options are wide open as far as the stem and the vase go, but a Wimshurst Machine tribute is definitely within the realm of possibility for both (but I'll probably just coat the original stem since it's in perfect working order). I'm thinking about securing the whole thing down and putting Leyden jars on both side. I already have some hemp-wrapped hoses that I've started on, so I have the feeling that modding the hoses will be fairly easy-- I just need to find some timeless material to sew into it. Any advice is appreciated and welcomed. (: I'll be taking pictures as it progresses and is finished if anyone is interested. rahl071
The problem with illumination is that you have to add a power source. you can make a base under the vase, and illuminate it with http://www.coolerguys.com/840556051701.html, some LED cannons. Otherwise, they sell balls you can drop down in the water to light it up, or you can use chemical illumination, like glow-sticks.

And as much as i dont want to doubt anyone, it just doesnt seem like its a fully functioning pipe.
It actually breaks down in to three main parts that are very easy to clean. You can even put them in the dishwasher. As far as it being a fully functional pipe... it was a hit at news years. Lorena F. Palin
So basically make a badass hookah, post it in a thread here, and throw it on ebay....Oh...I gotta jump on this. I can do some damn crazy fabrication.
Gaines
This thread was so inspiring that I went by Salvation Army the other day looking for steampunkish items. Unfortunately their selection of cool stuff was pretty limited. Definitely going to keep looking for parts to create my own.
Lorena F. Palin
Personally I don't think everyone should just start making steampunk hookahs. Way too manny other directions to go in. Also I think the novelty will ware off. People making hookahs need to inovate and invent...Or just make things that plain out are hilarious. coldsmok
cool idea and yeah if people go nuts with steam punk then it will get lame but i think we are along way away from that since you will only find this one if you search for them. Im kinda curious though how you got the copper to fit around the vase or if it was trial and error with many parts.
