Does The Internet Make You Dumb?

Recommended Posts

I needed to take a break from all internet based items for a few days mainly because I was finishing up my final papers for the semester. Anyhow, I was thinking about this while browsing 3 totally unrelated forums...shaving, paintball, hookah, and a game one. I noticed on all of them, especially this one, that people dont...no...they refuse to search for a topic before asking a question that has been answered a million times over.
Examples from each forum:
Where can I get Mama Bear's soap? - solution: search (mama bear) read the items that come up
Has anyone used Zap paintballs? - solution: search (zap) read the items that come up
When does aoc release? - solution: search release date read the 1 post that comes up
I have problems with tangiers - solution: search tangiers...OR READ THE FUCKING HOW TO OR TRY CALLING THE GOD DAMN NUMBER THAT COMES ON THE PACKAGING!

Perhaps it is the internet and the vast wealth of knowledge that is accessible that I should blame. The internet allows us to pull up any information we want effortlessly and has yielded generations of jackasses who expect everything handed to them. I really hate coming on to boards, and clicking new posts and seeing the same crap questions posted by 20+ different people.
Is it just plain stupidity? or Is it the internet's fault?

Discuss.

its partially noob and laziness problems...anymore, I'm becoming too lazy because everyone and their dog is too...I say screw it, if I can't find it in 5mins of searching...I post a new topic

Interesting point.

You may be on to something, but on the other hand, using the internet to research something is a bit like stopping to ask directions, or using the instructions when assembling something... and we all know the presence of the Y chromosome makes such action completely impossible.

What is worse is being a regular, and reading some noob post a question that has only been answered at once a week for the last 2 years.

Wow!! I couldnt agree more. Mush just deleted one of my posts for "bashing" someone that was asking how to clean a Nammor hose. Frankly both things piss me off. I notice it more and more every time I get on this forum, its pretty rediculis and lazy. If you can sign up on this forum, NO, even just find this forum then you can use the freakin search. I always start with checkin the "View new posts" and see the same freakin topic over and over. Or even pointless topics that go nowhere and the admins just let them build up. No wonder the server is having problems. Ill leave it at that I dont want to be "cute" or Mush will boot me so Im being "polite".

yes exactly my point nubbs. although it doesn't look like youve been a member too long. don't know how long you lurked either however for those of us who have been registered forever at this point its disgusting how often i see the same posts come up again and again. Just 2 seconds ago I saw yet another "tangiers problem" thread. idiots.
althought I have also had jd and mush say something when i yell at people to use the search. it gets to the point where i know i can leave the forum for about a week and when i come back i will see the same stupid questions that i saw when i left.

I gotta blame the search function on this site entirely. Whenever I try to bring up a topic that I remember from the past, I use many terms in the search. I search by the content of the stuff I posted myself and sometimes the thing doesnt bring up anything at all or brings so much of it I have to search through 10 pages of nonsense to get to the crux of what I was looking for. It searches by the terms, which is pretty broad. If I try and get detailed it doesnt work as well. We have to have an easier time searching for our specific problem. If we dont see it, we're likely to post something about it. Second, a Tangiers FAQ would be a GREAT thing for this site. It would save us a lot of trouble.

I agree completely with Bulldog. Ive search for like 10 mins one time looking for a topic. This forum is very nerve racking sometimes and pisses me off for wasting my time.

I think its funny that there are Hookah websites that look forward to all the feedback/reviews they get on here, but when it comes to the Administrators(not the moderators) listening to complaints about the site they either dont do anything or when they do mention it it takes forever to change. This isnt my first rodeo and I know how things are supposed to be done, so when one of my posts gets removed by some little peon for some reason beyond my comprehension...

Im just ranting now. This site needs an update! Complaint made. Edited by NUBBS

It's laziness. Everyone feels that they can get away with posting a topic and getting a bunch of quick answers after walking away from the computer for an hour instead of going and skimming through topics to see if there are any that are similar in problems.

I disagree with this vehemently. I feel that each time a new thread is posted things get discussed differently, other's chime in with ideas and opinions that might have been missed in previous discussions.

Also new ideas, new methods of thinking and approaches will come out of re-discussions.

If you don't understand that bashing the fuck out of someone is against the rules and spirit of the forum then maybe it's time you took some time off the forum?

Newbie's ask questions. Simple as. If you don't like it Feel free to play elsewhere - not that it will make any difference of course, because it happens everywhere.

I'm fairly sure this has run it's course and I really do not want newbie's reading this tripe. Edited by Johnny_D

Exactly the thing I posted about in the topic. We make complaints and you shut down the topic insted of listening. Do you guys work for the government? I oject the shutting down of the topic. 1st amendment! Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression!

The only person I have seen moaning is you.

As I said I would prefer that newbies and visitors did not read this pointless tripe. I've reopened it for you since you feel that we work for the government [Of course, I must work for the UK Government] Edited by Johnny_D

Then you need to read the rest of this topic. The only reason I "moan" is because I find it unfair that my posts are being deleted and then the topic I complain on get closed, when I see other member saying things that are off topic and rude. I have NEVER ONCE cursed on this forum. And I have NEVER found a reason to yell and put another person down beacuse they dont understand hookah. And I have a very bad temper, yet I know how to show some self-control and be polite. If someone gets pissed about my hookah I do what insulted smokers have done for hundreds of years, blow smoke in their face.

And if someone wants to show me just why complaining about something that annoys you is wrong an immoral, then please do. I understand that we were complining about the site, and thats might not be seen fit by the ones who run the show, but there's no harm in it. Just something to get off my chest is all. I never meant to offend, and I sincerely appoligize if I did.

Mush And JD I still have nothing against you except shutting me down. I just feel next time you do, please justify it to me. Again, I appoligize.

P.S. How am I a Noob? Because I just signed up for the site a while ago? Ive made almost as many posts as some that have been on here for a year, and none are wasted posts. Well to me at least.

actually...i tend to go with the lazyness factor for MANY of the duplicate posts. it's just easier to ask the question than to find the answer. But thats human nature in my opinion. I also feel JD has a valid point as well..each time a subject comes up there are going to be new answers and new people putting in their opinions, so if you see a thread you think is a wast of your time...JUST DON'T READ IT. That will sav many of you the stress of dealing wiht yet another tangiers thread.

as fpr the search engine, i use the advanced settings and have no problem finding something im looking for.

Nubbs,

you may have missed my meaning - I wasn't referring to you as a newbie.

I have not deleted your comments, and I'm fairly sure that If myself or mushrat delete comments we pm you the details and reasoning.

I, personally, am not going to retrieve the post you are referring too. That's up to mushrat, or the moderator that deleted it [I'm afraid I can't see who deleted it]

There is nothing personal in my comments to you, and as ever, This thread or comments within will not, or should not, change anything.

Just a personal message from me.

I also agree with that. BUT if its an answer your looking for somthing that has been posted tons of times then its annoying. BUT if its something specific your looking for then the new topic can be over looked, unless the question is so close to another topic that it SHOULD just be added to the topic it pertains to.
