The Common Misconception

Recommended Posts

Alright, so, I know how we all hate the common misconception that is placed with hookahs. But i have figured out how we can put a verifiable end to this controversy.

We need a public figure to endorse hookah smoking. We need an actor or comedian whom people love to talk about hookahs, and state how they are not meant to be used for substances of questionable legallity.

If we can get a person like Dane Cook or somebody to talk about hookahs in his comedic scetches and support our cause, it will greatly help our cause. maybe send him some stuff for incentive.

what do ya guys think?

I thought I suggested that in a movie idea...
but anyways. Dane Cook? LOL HORRIBLE EXAMPLE
that example is equivalent to the rabid dung of a frothing jungle monkey.
anyways but that is a good idea. Preferably in a movie, in which they discuss hookah stereotypes.

I think its a fine idea...but it will never work because NHT is wat hookahs were originally used for and NHT is what many people continue to use it for to this day. We just need to accept that and try to show that there are 2 different types of people who smoke hookah and that it's not ALWAYS associated with NHT. But to say that it's not made for it or isn't supposed to be used for it is ignoring the simple facts of life out there.

And with that kinda rep. I doubt we'd find a spokesperson who wasn't sketchier than the problem we are dealing with... wink.gif

The only thing that worries me now is seeing a member having his Hookah taken away because of this. Traveling in my car with the Leila hopefully does not cause a problem for me. I have no NHT and they can search me and take my blood, hair, pee in the cup. But do we need to go through all that hassle if the police knows it is only tobacco or are they going to use it as an excuse to do a full search of me and my car and my son??

I nominate Eddie Izzard! laugh.gif Most people don't know what he is anyhow!

Seriously, though, I think the best thing to do is as Mush says, one person at a time, set an example with what we use hookah for. After all, we can be the open about it, which is an advantage. I plan to bring my hookah to ren faire this weekend and smoke after hours, sure I will get to answer LOTS of questions! biggrin.gif

Mushrat has laid it out quiet nicely.

And as Anxiety rightfully points out - Who in there right mind [Apart from, maybe, Denis Leary] Going to endorse smoking....

We are all evil pariah's of the modern western culture....

Yeah, I doubt we could really find a spokesperson who cares enough to really do that.

Great idea though. I really wish we had a way to make the world a little less prejudiced. I've wanted to take my hookah to the park, lay down in the sun by the lake an have a smoke so many times....but we all know what would happen. Even if I didn't get arrested, get my hookah taken or anything, just the face that I'm scared of having the police called on me for relaxing is complete shit. Edited by SupremeOstrich

The only thing that will let us smoke our hookahs in peace is if those in power realize that their war on drugs is a fail, and an oppressive, expensive one at that and stop this silly effort at prohibition.

If everything's legal, they'll have no reason to search anyone. That's a whole different matter though, and not likely to happen.

only reason i suggested Dane Cook, is because often times his "sayings" become pop culture sayings.

but you are all right. not many people will endorse smoking, I thought Dane cook was a possibility, cuz he is a maverick of sorts. but if we could get proper hookah smoking in the public eye more, it would probly help our cause.

maybe we should all smoke in public more often. maybe get a few of our local news stations to do stories on it, get the possitive word out. there isn't ALOT of bad press out there for the hookah. I think most of the problem is that there is almost no press at all, so people go with their presumptions and what they think we know, but if we get a different message out there, maybe we could educate people more.

I think we SHOULD go out and smoke in public more. if you get arrested or in trouble with it, bring it up to the special interest stories of your newspapers or TV stations.

Nice idea...but you will never get rid of misconception...it will forever remain 'tagged' with Argeelehs.

Fuck who ever is going to doubt what I got packed in my bowl. That's as simple as I can say it.

You know, i don't think it's even a misconception anymore. Actually, as a matter of fact, NHT use in hookahs is growing. Of course, it is all the party kid's fault, they don't load a mixed bowl ever.

As a matter of fact, this dude just recently mixed his NHT into a bowl i had loaded (and was being smoked) without even saying a word.

My cousin from Maine was recently telling me that when a hookah is loaded up in her area, it is never without it's illegal counterpart mixed in. That's how she thought hookahs were suppose to be used.

but anyway i cant really find a black and white answer on which it was originally used for but my grandpa always has told me he had been told they were used for tobacco but there are a bunch of different stories of which it was used for first it seems to me it is a chicken or the egg kind of thing

What about Snoop Dogg? Stuff he says have become a part of pop culture too. :-p

Seriously though, no one will ever be able to change the entire misconception. And like Zenslk said, we're probably in the minority.

+1 for lewis black or maybe stephen colbert or john stewart could do a bit about hookah on one of their shows

John Stewart actually did have a small piece on hookah a while back. It was one of the younger reporters( he didn't last long), but he pretty much made hookah's into the stereo typical thing they are used for....def didnt help the "real" community out. In answer to the post above about hookah's being used for tombiek and what not, they have also been used for opium for quite a few hundred/thousand years as well. Whatever could be or can be smoked, has been smoked in a hookah and its the negative stuff that gets into the limelight easier than the legal stuff sad.gif . Just gotta deal with it. For the record, hookahs have slowly been penetrating American television. Monk had an episode that featured Snoop Dogg with a 4 hose rotator. New Amsterdam had the main character smoking at a lounge from a traditional egyptian pipe.

Harold and Kumar 2 had a wall full of hookahs near the end, but unfortunately, a few NHT pipes made their way in.

What it comes down to is that the ignorance of common misconception should just be the bliss of more knowledgeable people. Who cares what people think as long as you're enjoying yourself?

As a side note... I believe Dane Cook fully supports NHT.... so he's probably the wrong candidate.
