asp230
Is it better to let the coal burn until the entire thing is ash or should I scrape the ash off periodically? I usually take the entire bowl off and tap it in the ash tray to avoid getting ash inside the bowl, then put the coal (much smaller now) back on top. Any suggestions either way? s_smith001
good question. i usually ash mine but im not sure why exactly haha.
chromecarz00
Reason is that the ash makes the heat dissipate, or not reach the coal whichever makes more sense. It forms a layer in between the coal and the shisha, not letting it burn.plus the ash goes in to the flavor and tastes disgusting.
Ninjalex
Chrome is right. The more direct heat you can get, the better. I used to have to ash like crazy to keep the coals red hot, but I use a windcover made from a can now. The coals last about 1 1/2 times longer and I don't have to ash anywhere near as much. HookahCrazy
I used to ash all the time (and i dont know why, i gues i just thought it looked right). Now i rarely do anymore, but i guess ill start to!
Itami
It depends on how lazy/tired I'm feeling. If I'm laying back chill with a hookah and a great song playing, I'm not usually bothered to ash out the coals unless I really star to notice it tasting weird to the smoke starting to lessen. Either way, it helps out your session if you're on it.
liquidglass
yeah I'm with chrome, normally (i'm outside) so i just take off the coals and blow off the topas far as windcovers go, you use them for 1) the coals not falling off and 2) if you're outside the wind will burn down your coals fast
mjdx88
When I use a standard Egyptian bowl I normally need just 1 whole QL in the center (I know people are gonna start freaking out after that line) with a windcover and I dont ash it at all, when I notice the coal is pretty much out I light up another QL and place a bit to the right or left but still centered and get another coal out of it. I have never tired 3 but 2 coals this way with AF, the flavor is still strong and nice thick smoke, not the thickest I have ever gotten but it works. jbean422
i always ash simply because you know when you need to because it either gets in the bowl or makes the shisha not smoke as well
Stuie
I rarely ash, i do ash more with coco naras but with QL just light em and leave em.
leadpipecinch21
i ash every 10 minutes or so. i just lift up the tray, knock the coals on to them, then drop the tray down 3 inches or so above the resting tray(if that makes sense...). knocks the ash off, and keeps me from spilling ash everywhere.but, i've been using diamante fingers, and those things ash like no other, so if i don't then there gets to be a layer under the coal and takes away from the heat and smoke, so...gotta do what i gotta do. Codename067
ash whenever needed. 2 mins 5 mins 10 mins, when ever the coal looks ready to ash out.
DarkParade
i mostly do it just to see how big my coals are and usually after i do the smoke gets better/less harsh but i wouldnt bother with a quicklight it would prolly just shatter if you tryed to drop it
*HOT&SMOKING*
I use QL's and the only reason I ash, is when I move the coal around the bowl, the ash usually comes off somewhat. So I generally just take the coal off the bowl, get the ash of the bowl, and lightly drop the coal in the tray and then put it back on in a different spot.-H&S
Alademuerte
QUOTE (Codename067 @ May 6 2008, 02:25 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>ash whenever needed. 2 mins 5 mins 10 mins, when ever the coal looks ready to ash out.Yup, same here. My friend I smoke a lot with is pretty damn lazy I guess.. And he will ash like every half hour, if even that.. Sometimes I come over to find the hookah sitting there after he is done smoking with the ash still attached at the size of a regular finger coal...I like to constantly ash, like ever 5 minutes and slightly rotating the coals around the bowl every time. billy
If my coals have ash around them whilst smoking and decide to take it off, the session is much shorter but if I leave the ash and just nudge my coals the sessions are much longer :/

thugacation
Gotta regularly keep ashing, I usually drag the coal of the funnel into the tray and knock all the ash off and put it back on. Gotta make sure no small bits of ash remain on top of the funnel as it could easily get inside the funnel, so just usually blow off anything thats left on top
