punkonjunk
OK so, I don't know if it's the dramatic climate change over the past few weeks that's effected it, but I acclimate each bowl before smoking it for like an hour. But things just aren't going so well. When I do get it going well enough so that it's not burning, the smoke is mediocre at best. But it usually gets harsh pretty quickly. I've been rotating the coals and working on heat management, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Below are setup photos. as for what you can't see, it's 2 layers of pre-sliced foil, shiny side down. Circa sams club, it's awesome. Below is my tobacco, fluffed and stirred and stuff.Below is my bowl, packed almost to the top. Sonthert or whatever his name is, the tangiers guy said in a thread he doesn't ever have it touching the foil. so I think this is right. fluffed and nice.Below is my hole pattern. From some FAQ, wait I still have it open, here it is. http://completehookah.com/setup/tangiers.shtmlBelow is my coal setup. Should i try quarters? so yeah help me out. NickReppinThe909
another ring of holes, 1 sheet of HD foil, try a windcover and pack it down tight and it should be alot better
mdl
You need about 2-3 times as many holes in your foil. You also want to pack a little more tobacco into your bowl making sure that the tobacco is touching the edges of the bowl. Use the bowl as an actual scoop to scoop the tobacco into it, then use a fork to take off excess tobacco along with neaten it out and pack it down a little. Make sure to stir up the tobacco very well too as the juice will tend to drain to the bottom of the container you store it in.Also, when you pick up the bowl after packing it, hold it so you can see the profile like this;As you can see, the tobacco is actually slightly higher up than the edge of the bowl. When you put the foil on it will pack the tobacco down to the correct density. When you poke holes in your foil, remember to poke them to the bottom of the bowl, through the tobacco.Don't be worried about the foil touching the tobacco. It will be fine. punkonjunk
OK, so I'm going to try repacking the bowl and seeing what happens, i tried using the bowl as a scoop, and it looks a lot like the pic.I'm not trying to be a dick, but are you guys saying the guy who makes the tabacco is wrong? or is that just old info I'm recalling? Thanks for the quick help. I'll try another layer of holes along the centre. Edited May 6, 2008 by punkonjunk
NickReppinThe909
one layer of heavy duty reynolds foil works best IMO
mdl
^wordThere's no real need for two layers, seem like a waste of foil to me. Edited May 6, 2008 by mdl

mdl
Hahah nah Eric's not wrong at all. There are different ways of setting up a hookah and bowl to smoke and the more ways you know the higher the probability of you getting it working is.
punkonjunk
Good to know. I will continue to experiment, but I packed a bowl as you said, and it was INSTANTLY BETTER. I'm gonna play with it, but holy crap... It's better than it ever was in my mod bowl. I'll keep you guys updated, but you're all gods.EDITStill going amazing. A little tickly, but I had my coals in one place too long, I think. I read somewhere that if it's burning, a little water can save a bad bowl. Does this work? the tickle only starts up with my coals at the 12 and 6 positions. it's weird. Edited May 6, 2008 by punkonjunk

You have to make sure that baby is nice and full. You can watch my videos I made on packing a Phunnel. The link is in my sig. Glad to hear you were able to get some good smoke and taste, you are heading in the right direction.

Snoopy1966
The tobacco I buy at my local shop is amazing. They got 2 shipments in this past month and all the flavors I got from there I have been able to acclimate for a very short time and have a great taste and big ol' puffy clouds! Summer time should be great here in WI for shipping from HC and HS and MNH.

Alademuerte
More holes.I never did follow the whole, shisha touching the foil thing. It seems against hookah ethics to me due to the fact that the whole basis of smoking a hookah is to heat up the molasses/glycerin for the smoke and all... Which makes it healthier then actually burning the tobacco like in a cigarette. So why should I put the shisha up to the foil where it has direct contact with the coals? I dont do it, and it works fine for me.Here is a variation to how I do my phunnel. This one has maybe 1 or 2 too many holes in the middle or such. But this was a nakhla/tangiers pack, and it was the first hot day of spring so I wasnt trying to cook it.

punkonjunk
Hey, you aren't one of those guys who work at Appleton souvenir and cigar, are you? I got into hookah there as a suggestion from a friend, then manned up and bought one. I still buy shisha and cloves from there, but with these prices on the internet... heh. 10.50 for tangiers on MNH is too low.
