Long Time Smoker Finally Noticing The Side Effects?

Recommended Posts

So i used to be able to smoke shisha fine, then i got bronchitus. And well its been two weeks since i stopped taking the medications and now whenever i go to smoke any shisha i start coughing uncontrollably.. even with minimal coals on and minimal smoke i cough uncontrollably.

I have an appointment with a lung specialist tomorrow, i had a chest x ray and they said all my stuff was within normal levels.

So im confused, has one of my favourite past times going to have to come to an end...

Anyone else ever have a similar episode occur? or occuring right now?

Also the odd times i push it through and get a normal hit ( i can smoke Nakhla Apple/Jasmine since they are very light flavours even then its cough alot..)

I can no longer get big volumes of smoke when i force a hard inhale, and i have a cough now the next day after i smoke which makes me sound like a wheezing old man.

(im also not overweight or too unhealthy, albeit i do have a beer gut(Canada)).

i can still jog and run the same but the shisha kills me.

I have a couple friends who grew up with parents who smoked like fiends, and they often can't smoke much without coughing a lot. They chock it up to having weakened lungs because they developed in a house with three adults who smoked several packs a day each. If you had something like that, the bronchitis may have weakened your lungs temporarily and you're feeling the effect more? I'm no doctor, but ya never know.

Sucks though, maybe try giving it a break or drinking something smooth with it? Maybe try having a lozenge in your mouth beforehand to make it less sensitive.

If the docs say its ok it should be ok.
What I think it is is a problem in both psychological terms (dunno how exactly to explain that) and also in the rest of your body.
My advice is (as someone who has experienced smoething similair) take a break, make sure you drink the minimum recommended amount of water (2 lbs body weight = 1oz water; 8 oz water = 1 cup) and some cranberry juice, eat healthy for say 2 maybe 3 weeks and come back tell me how you feel.
And of course excersice

Yeah I forgot to mention of course, take a break from smoking. Edited by chromecarz00

Two things worth noting with Bronchitis or acute bronchitis

1. It can be [One of] precursor for Pneumonia - Take time to ensure you are fully recovered
2. You can still have upper bronchial swelling or aggravation or scaring or inflammation following severe infection, Again take time to ensure proper recovery. These things would not show up on x-ray.

If your body can cope with it try taking some Ibuprofen[1] an hour before you want to smoke as this can reduce swelling.

[1] - Ensure you take proper pharmaceutical advice before taking anything, also read the label.

I agree with jd and the rest..you may be feeling better but your lungs may not have fully recovered to the point where they can handle smoke yet. Give it a bit more of a break if I was you. The hookah will still be there in another week or two.

It takes a VERY long time to get rid of bronchitis compared to the average chest cold. I'm a singer and even a short round of it will shut down my voice for at least 6 weeks, sometimes more. You can clear and heal your lungs faster by taking liquid echinacea - has to be the liquid in alcohol several times a day for a week. But you need to be patient, very patient.

Dude, just don't over-run yourself. Other than that it's just normal with some extra deep inhales everyday. Edited by ZenSilk
