Aggroman
Help me... I am making a mess! Anyone have some good techniques for breaking down lump charcoal into natural sizes? Right now I'm hacking away at it with a cleaver and getting dust all over the place, not to mention random pieces flying all over the room. How do you guys do your chopping? Aggroman
That's "manageable sizes" not "natural" sizes... lol
mushrat
Well, I generally make a mess myself. But to minimize the mess i use a sharp razor knife, and instead of chopping, i press. This uses pressure instead of force, reduceing shatter. You can also wrap your chunks in paper towel. The best thing I do is every so often sit down and chop up a bunch at a time and store the extra in a tupperware container. Ahh..the joys of the natural bulk charcaol... ravi
Buy a charcoal dish, heat them up and u can just break them up with tongs if thats what you use to carry the coals around. Usually its not a mess.
yashman19
When I was younger and had one of those massive jawbreaker candies and was tired of licking it, I wraped that bad boy in a kitched towel and just hammered it until it broke into smaller chuncks. Give that a try
Aggroman
Paper towel (or the jawbreaker apporach - I used to do that too!) are brilliant ideas. Thanks!
iheartvarg1
i just put my royals on a paper plate and smack them with the sharp end of a hammer. gives a nice even, clean break all the time
pyramidscheme
For the natural lump coals, use a nail and hammer. Place the nail, pointy end down, on the side of the lump opposite the grain, and give a mild whack. should give you several manageble pieces.
