Having A Problem With The Tangiers Bowl, Not Just With Tangiers Shisha

Hey guys,

So ive bought a tangiers bowl. and instead of wasting the tangiers ive bought, im trying to master packing/preparing the tangiers bowl with other shisha. So I used Al fakher watermelon in it and used the step by step guide of these intructions, but the smoke is hardly thick, its very very thin, like vapour almost.

I can hear it cooking, but its very very thin, so i poked another 2 holes in the center where the main phunnel whole is and it became even thinnner....

I tried again, but this time but a layer of foil in the bottom, so i wont need to use as much shisha and it is still very thin smoke. Im sure its me and not the bowl.

then i used shisha potion on a normal head and it was lovely.

Any help would be great, really wanna learn it by the next UFC when all the guys are over.

I used 2 instant coals, broke them into halfs and spread it into 4 areas. normal head works great like that.

Any vids would be great too on what to do.

It's also possible that you might benefit from a Funnel Bowl Mod that blocks the central hole and forces the air through the tobacco....... If smoking with Al Fakur

Cant be an air leak, cause i put on another head straight away and it worked great.
hmmm, really wanna get this working. whats this mod, where can i buy 1?

My guess is your heat. Try adding another coal. Only a normal bowl I use 2 coals, but with a medium phunnel I use 3 to get it going well. Exotica only btw

Actually, 4 halves should be plenty. and the holes in the center don't effect the smoke density in the least...I get super clouds with about 5-10 holes clusteded in the center as well as the 2 rings of holes around the edge with tthe tobacco.

You can try adding more coal i guess....experiment and see, its what most of us end up doing anyways...

If you find that the foil is being sucked down, then just use an elastic band around the shaft of the bowl and over the foil. Or just use thicker foil, or two pieces of foil

Hmmm, I will try what you guys have wrote.
Do ppl get thick smokes with other tobaccos on this bowl?

Also, do you guys press the foil down, so that you can see the ring in the middle and the inside of the outline of the bowl? Need some more vids on how to prepare it.

dont put holes in the middle, use more heat and use a mod if you want to waste the money buy one online or you can make your own and you will get amazing clouds

i dont get why people put holes in the middle because you will just be drawing plain air through the stem since air like every other thing in the world takes the path of least resistance

Mod it up for Non-Tangiers tobacco.

more tobacco, maybe you're not packing enough. Try adding a bit more if you can

Use pin holes. Fluff the tobacco a lot. I used the Tangiers bowl with some really juicy Layalina and it smoked like a champ, no mod needed. If that doesnt work, add more coal.

I got it working great for a bit.
Nick 909 and manic were right for me. I didnt put any holes right above the phunnel hole and loads around and it worked great.

Worked great twice, but having other problems now. If you guys could give me some advise.

I dont know it its cause it has so many holes, but I get a huge huge buzz now. More like cant move, for a few mins, lol. Maybe too much heat.

Also, I dont pack above the rim now, because I can hear the shisha constantly cooking and it becomes really harsh after a bit. Im using 3 instant lights now in a triangle method. I dont get it because I went to a shisha place in dubai this week and he was using al fakher and packing above the rim in a normal bowl and you could see by the foil it was over the rim and it didnt give a burnt taste, he was using natural small coals though and wasnt super thick smoke. Ive heard with some shisha brands you can do this and others you cant pack close to the foil. In the vids on how to pack tangiers, everyone goes above the rim, and it doesnt seem to burn for them. Im using Al fakher to perfect how to use the bowl, but I have starbuzz, fantasia and tangiers also.

My other problem is, if i make the foil too close to the phunnel, it seems when I breath in the phunnel blocks the foil in a way and makes hard to suck in. Maybe because the foil im using now is alot thinner because I ran out of my thick foil? and if I dont press the foil down, I cant see the centre rim to know where to put my holes...?

I use reynolds heavy duty foil and press it tight around the rim unless i'm smoking tangiers so definetly go drop 4.99 on some good foil. hate to break it to you BUT if you perfect AF in the phunnel you have only perfected AF in the phunnel every shisha acts differently in a phunnel. as for the buzz what brand did you switch from, did you eat a hearty meal before smoking, were you coals fully lit, were you dehydrated ? i could list a few others but those are some basic reasons for the huge buzz or you could just be smoking too much and not getting enough oxygen

Pushing the foil down is causing your problem. Because it was bent that way it can pull it down and clog the air flow. It just takes a little time to figure out where the center hole is. I suggest using a corn cob holder. That's what Canon told me. Seems to work great just keep one side close to the outer rim and work your way around and your golden.

i hate to be the master of the obvious, but do you have a tight fit with the grommet on your funnel?
my funnel did not even come with one, so maybe try a different grommet?

Just get some Bacofoil. Not sure if they have an HD version but even their classic foil is nice and thick

Extra juicy stuff that is fine cut like AF and Al Amir can be problematic in the phunnel. A solution that has worked for me is to use a fat toothpick or similar to punch the holes in the foil. The "trick" is to push the toothpick all the way down until it hits the bottom of the bowl. This increases the surface area exposed to heat and generally make a huge difference. Hope this helps.

I honestly can't think of anything to add. Nick's pretty much covered the basics, although I would be more lenient and say that "once you master AF using the funnel bowl, you've mastered all brands except Tangiers!".

Hower I would add that I'm not a fan of the "poking hole to the bottom of bowl" method. The problem with this method is that you end up "steaking" little bits of shisha on your skewer/poking-impliment. Then as you bring up your skewer it brings the bit of leaf upto the foil, where it sticks, and then burns harshly. I've found this to be EXTREMELY problematic with Tangiers, with other brands, less noticeable. Generally I try not to let the shisha touch the foil. I know sometimes you can get away with it, but as a rule of thumb: just say no, and you'll always have decent smoke.

Regarding thick foil, well I'm in the UK too, so I know how you feel Just use two pieces of whatever you have lying around, it'll do the job. Or put an elastic band around the shaft of the funnel bowl to hold the foil in place.

Regarding RayverX vid on hole placement. You can do that, it works ok. Personally I dont notice "a lot" of difference with the hole placement. For me it appears that as long as you have decent airflow (which can be checked by putting you lipps around the bottom of the bowl and sucking. If it very restrictive, just add more holes), then it doesn't matter what the hole pattern is. Some sort of uniform spread across the foil is usually good enough (but avoid the direct center for non-Tangiers).

I'm assuming you've stuck with AF, and the buzz came while smoking that? It could just be a one off freak. Like Nick said, dehydrated, low blood sugar levels, sucking too hard and chain smoking, etc.

But I warn you, when it comes to Tangiers the buzz will be killer! I highly recommend that if you want to smoke Tangiers from your funnel, you follow the n00b packing method thats in Snoppy's signature. That method has never failed me
