Crap In The Hoses

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

I've been digging around the site for the past couple hours. There's tons of great info around here, and I even freshened up on my bowl making techniques. There's one thing that I couldn't find that has concerned me...

On occasion, the first takes through my hoses have a kind of black 'soot' that stick to your tongue. I try to blow it out through the back of the house, but that rarely solves the problem. I've speculated that this is from residual smoke that has crystalized from previous sessions, but I'm really not sure what to make of it. Anybody know what can be done about this?

Thanks for any feedback!

i'm sorry, but whats a phunnel going to do about moisture in the hoses leading to rust?
i understand that funnels are groovy, but i don't think they have superpowers lol

I think Nick means that using a phunnel bowl prevents crap from getting into the hose from the bowl. The rusty coil is a separate issue which also causes "crap" to be inside the hose.

One way to reduce chances of rust is to try to limit water getting into the hose. Try lowering the water level in the base, but not too much as to make the smoke too harsh. Also, taking slower pulls might reduce water splashing up into the hose from the base. Of course, the best thing to do is buy/make a washable hose. This costs extra money/effort, but I'd say it's worth it in the longer run as you don't have to compromise water level or taking those huge fast supersuction pulls laugh.gif .

Also: When you get a new hose, make sure to blow it out after every session to clear out stale smoke. It probably wont help prevent rust, but can help against flavor stains. If you do get a washable hose, you could always clean it out with hot water and lemon juice. tongue.gif

honestly if you cant stand the "soot" throw your hose away and go down to your nearest smoke shop and buy a cheap one for 5 bucks, and if your a big spender go buy a namor online at anyone of the big retailers for around $20. That's just something that's gonna happen overtime with those hoses

it filters through water. nothing appears in your hose. the phunnel still has a giant hole where ash will fall through, and it will get stuck to your stem or in your water.

grab the two ends of your hose and whip it on the group decently hard. after a few times you hit the ground blow out all the residue inside the hose, and repeat the process as long as it takes so when you take a hit you dont get the residue pieces in your mouth.
