pigpen
I am 41 and I still have to hide hookah from my mom! I am married, own my own house, have a child, a full time job, don't borrow money etc. But in my moms eyes I am still her "child".I just got back from a family reunion and all of the cousins (all of us in our 40s) were out behind the bathroom smoking like we did when we were kids.It was hilarious! Sure - tell your parents. I know I would want my kid to be open and honest with me. But realize - some parents will hold onto the leash forever.Diaper pin anyone? staygone
Everytime I smoke outside, my folks come out and take a couple puffs. They were way more pissed to find cigs than the hookah.-QM

srawas89
Well my mom started smoking hookah before I was born...however he does not really like me smoking it because she does not want me to smoke it every day which she thinks I will eventually do. She is ok with it but she will not smoke with me any time soon
Raziel510
I wish I could tell my parents. My dad might be cool with it but my mom would VERY upset if she found out I smoked. Her brothe actually smoked cigarettes up until recently but instead of making her more comfortable with it, that's made her even more fearful smoking. So ya, no telling me parents. darkone253
My parents knew I smoked cigs already so they were pretty much cool with it. My mom even expressed an interest in smoking the hookah herself, but we have yet to get her to. They both used to smoke cigs and are disappointed that I smoke them now too, but for some reason they think the hookah is alright (better than cigs, anyways). My Dad shows no interest in any sort of smoking, so I don't even bother asking him. My friends like to while we smoke in my lounge/garage though. HMT
I found out about hookah when my uncle brought an old km from Israel and gave it to my dad as a gift. I saw my parents smoking hookah with my uncle several times, and eventually they let me try a few puffs. (first flavor i smoked was Nakhla-Double Apple). One time my parents left on vacation and I was at home by myself, so I smoked the hookah with my friends. when they came back i told them about it. they were cool. Now i have 4 of my own hookahs and i kinda stole their old all brass km since they dont smoke it. i've been smoking hookah ever since. all my friends come over to smoke on my patio, and my parents are always cool with it. every once in a while they'll take a few puffs.i def agree with codename. it must be a burn having to hide it from your folks. kjohnson1189
I have been smoking hookah now for about two years and just recently showed my mom my hookah. Much to my surprise she was very interested in it and helped me set it up for me and my friends... She has yet to try it. My dad knows that I go to lounges once in a while, I just dont' want him knowing I own one because he will tell me not to smoke it... And I hate to disobeye my parents. fiddlercrabus
My mom is pretty cool with me smoking hookah as long as I don't do it every day or for more than an hour or so at a time. I think she understands that it's one of the things that helps me keep my head screwed on straight!
mattathayde
ya i was surprised how much my mom was kinda like, o ok (she used to be a nurse too)i do thank ABC for showing hookah on a how the world relaxes for summer thing. i kinda started explaining it to her and said that i probably was going to get one when i leave for my apartment for this year at school followed by the "since its cheaper and we go to the lounges up there a lot any way plus that the lounges are dirty and crapy" she was pretty chill with it, a little weary about it being tobacco but not to much.my rents know i go to the lounges and smoke them at friends places so i dont think they care that much-matt
plzimaninja
My parents were understanding I actually never smoked and i ended up landing a job at a hookah bar here in phoenix. My parents were cool with me working there (i was still to much of a goodie to smoke) so one day i tried it and loved it I had to tell my folks my mom was perfectly ok with it and in fact the next day she bought me a hookah. And now she calls me all the time to see if i need shisha or coals

Chiefin
I told my mom and she was like, "I can't believe you smoke! Do you know how bad that is for you!" She hounded me about it incessantly for a couple weeks. I finally told her to do some research about the health risks and what not...The after that, the conversations turned to, "It's not bad for you, but it's still smoking!" Progress I guess. She's pretty cool with it now, but she doesn't necessarily promote it or overly approve. It's just something she knows I do when I come home from work. My parents have been living in Japan for 2 years (Air Force) and I've been in Austin the whole time. I'm allowed to form one simple vice in my life.I don't think I will tell my dad...I'm sure he knows. He doesn't drink or any of that...straight-shooter Mr. America type stuff. You've gotta admire that type of thing. His opinion of me means a lot, and regardless of how harmless or traditional Hookah might be, there's still that taboo because they come from a different time. This thread cracks me up a little. It's like we're coming out.......only it's with Hookah. Edited August 2, 2008 by Chiefin
malakas
my mom actually came with me to the shop when I got my first hookah and convinced me to get a bohemian glass Mya instead of a QT...AND negotiated a butt load with the store owner. Nether of my parents mind but they refuse to smoke with me..I DID, however, get my aunts and uncles into it after they found out I wasn't smoking NHT. ecaddiction
I told them I do it, and asked if I could smoke at home. They said whatever I choose to do is cool, but they didn't want to let me because they didn't want to support it. They don't see the point, and I have a 14 year old sister they don't want me to influence. Tried talking to them about it twice, and they just don't get why I would want to do it. JaklarOcksa
Edit: OK that was weird, typed a post and hit the wrong key, it posted, but with only the first 2 words. Basically, mom was a bit upset about my smoking since dad died of lung cancer from smoking cigs all of his life, but she trusts me so she'll probably be ok with the hookah, too, although she won't like that I actually *gasp* spent money on it, lol. She was ok with my smoking a pipe after I explained to her that it A) tasted good and was relaxing, and B) had less negative health effects than she's probably heard most of her life, provided smoking is done in moderation. (Alzheimers risk is vastly reduced in smokers, for instance.) There's no reason that, with the motto "all things in moderation," one can't enjoy tobacco.
