Counter_Culture
use a orange or lemon...preferably an orange cuz its wider..or any fruit that cud be carved out....make sure u use the gromet too.
wizzard880
what is a gromet
yashman19
Well, typically you would use a rubber grommet to put on the stem, and then put the bowl ontop of the grommet. It makes your bowl airtight, not letting in any air.. And yes, I can't think of anything you could use to make a home made bowl, other than using a bunch of foil and molding it into a bowl...but not sure if thats the best way. I would suggest a fruit bowl too. Heres a picture of the one I used. yashman19
If you do a fruit bowl, you don't need a grommet. And a grommet is a little rubber thing that you put on the stem, and then put your bowl over. The grommet just makes a hookah air-tight. Try putting your clay bowl on the stem and smoking, it won't work because too much air will leak in because the bowl isn't sealed onto the stem. If you use a rubber grommet, it makes the bowl stick on the stem without letting air in.

lilotaku
Hey Yash, did you just end up clearing the top of the orange, just enough to fit a good amount of maassell. or did you clear out the whole entire orange? I was thinkin about clearing the upper half, and that way you can still use the bottom of the innards to have a solid base.
lilotaku
I also think this picture definitaly needs to be added to the front page. Sorta getting tired of staring at the metro-smoker. Dang, thats also a lotta coal on that try, looks like you guys were gettin ready for a long run .
yashman19
I just carved a crater roughly the same size as a normal bowl, so yeah, pretty much the bottom half of the orange is intact, except for a hole going down to the stem.
ravi
thats a nice packed fuit bowl......which store in nyc did u get the hookah?
Ratswallow
You can also use an apple...it's a bit harder to carve, but it makes for a good change of flavor...especially if what you're smoking doesn't go well with citrus.
Brad
Apples have always worked well for me ...they seem to keep the burning down too.

[/quote] Sure thing. Its not very strong, but the juices from the orange do mix in with the ma'assel, and you can definately taste a hint of citrius. Using an orange as a bowl is a nifty, fun way to spice up a session, but you will find that its only good every once in a while to do. It becomes a hassle to cut the orange, it gets messy from all the juices, and the foil takes a bit longer to put on because of the headpins. Its fun, but not every day
