filmigeek
So some of you know I'm new and my husband gave me a hookah for my birthday. I spent some time lurking around here, and then ordered a clay bowl, a packet of Al Farkah Golden Rose, and a roll of Three Kings. My order arrived yesterday and I now have everything I need to get started. I am so psyched! Husband was sick yesterday so I decided filling the house with smoke wasn't the most considerate thing to do. But I will fire it up this weekend, I hope. Wish me luck - I am taking the plunge!
Endlesssummer63
my fiancé and I smoke together all the time. She is part Syrian and never tried it until we began dating. Now she loves it. We find it a great way to unwind from the day together and watch our favorite tv shows (House!!) Although as a suggestion, you may want to mix the rose with something. I find it a little too overbearing by itself. Have fun and enjoy! make some green tea to go along with it!!!
Big Boss
When I first started smoking, I broke my clay bowl on the stem my first go-around. Be careful when putting it on the stem. I'd hate to hear that it broke for you on your first smoke. Good choice with the Golden Rose. I think you'll enjoy it. Hopefully this is the start of a long and joyous hobby for you. We love *House* in our house too. Not sure if I'll be able to get the guy to smoke with me though - he just got the hookah for me because he knew I wanted one. That's why I picked the flavor - I didn't want to buy a huge amount of shisha for my first try but if I do like it I will try more flavors next time. Don't worry, just place it on top and press it down lightly. You'd have to push pretty hard to actually break it, so just remember that a little pressure is usually enough. Oh, and make sure you use a grommet/gasket/whatever you call it (the round rubber "tip" that sits on top of the stem... this protects the bowl and the metal of the stem from making contact with each other).Congrats on your first hookah! filmigeek
Okay! Finally fired that sucker up last night. It was great - can't wait to try again! Just a couple of questions from my first time:The smoke was smooth and wonderful for a while, but after about 25 minutes it turned harsh and started making me cough. Was I getting ash, or burning tobacco, or what? How do I prevent it? What do you do when the coals start to crumble? Thanks for any advice. I expect I'll be firing up the hookah again this evening. MrMoodz
Heat Management. Make sure you aren't putting too many coals on top. With 3 Kings I use a hammer and nail to strike the center of the disc prior to lighting it. It will break into 2 or 3 pieces. With the smaller pieces I put them near the edge of the bowl but not directly in the center. Edited May 30, 2008 by MrMoodz
Codename067
You are in for a ride!As for harshness, follow what MrMoodz said, and always make sure that you are ashing and rotating the coals on the bowl. filmigeek
You guys are the best. I followed the advice you've given me and last night I had a great smoke.I started with one 3 Kings, broken into three pieces. It wasn't enough heat; very little smoke. Eventually I switched to one whole 3 kings, placed near the edge of the bowl, moving every 15 minutes or so. It was PERFECT. I got good smooth smoke and was able to keep the smoke coming for HOURS just by getting a fresh coal ready when the coal I had on started to fall apart. I think I used 4 coals and I smoked all evening. Perfect! Thanks very much! I am hooked, guys. I just picked up three more packets of Al-Fakher (another packet of rose, some double-apple, and some grape) and will place an order for some 250g tubs as soon as I find out which flavors I like. filmigeek
QUOTE (StarCuzz @ May 31 2008, 04:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>OHHH! AL FAKHER GRAPE!!! NOOO! Thanks for the warning! I'll try it anyhow, since I have it. It was just a 50g box and only cost a few bucks. What's wrong with it - is it too cloying-sweet, or artificial and nasty-tasting? I really liked the rose and double-apple (they were good mixed too), so I have already ordered 250g tubs of those. And, for those keeping score, my husband (who gave me the hookah as a birthday present) sat down and smoked with me last night too. He wasn't blown away, but he liked it and he'll do it again. I think if I had better heat-management skills, I could have given him a better experience. Ah well, I will learn in time I guess.
Endlesssummer63
yea grape is a tough flavor to capture. I still haven't found a god grape. Stay away from the Romman grape, for it is the worst out there!!
Cybersist
AF grape = ketchup. Id stick with non-grape flavors....we no, i lie... Nahkla makes one hell of a grape if your up for it.
filmigeek
I tried the Al-Fakher grape last night; it wasn't that awful, but I think I was expecting the absolute worst after reading the replies here. It's not my favorite and I probably won't buy it again, but I'll smoke the rest of it (it's just a 50g packet) possibly mixed with apple and it will be fine.
