Sariél
plz spk english. There have been more and more messages of late that I have to read 2 or three times to understand. If you have a question or something to say, please say it clearly. If you don't care enough to write out the whole word, then why should I care to answer? Its not like we're thumb-typing ths on our cell phones. If you are, you're a better man than I, as my arthritis kicks in after 2 words. Now you kids get the hell off my lawn afore I set the dogs on ya' dagnabbit!!

mushrat
dizz: what are you? 12? Please atleast TRY to act like a semi-reasonable person here on the forum. There is a difference between a joke and just being vulgar for vulgars sake. Learn the difference or go play someplace else.
dizzing
sheesh, i didn't realize i had crossed the line. but whatever, for what it's worth, i didn't mean to come off as juvenile. sorry about that :-

Sonthert
And some of these posts in some foreign languages...Hebrew??I know I haven't been around here very long, and perhaps I haven't put enough time to give an opinion about philosophy of this site, but:If this is one of the few English-speaking sites dedicated to smoking tobacco from hookahs and we banish drug-references, why do we allow foreign language on open messages? PM each other in foreign languages, use a site that is in your native tongue, something...why post a message to someone in a language other people can't understand?I think this is in the same vein as what you are talking about Sariel? I guess I agree overall. If you're old enough to smoke hookah, you're old enough to use your big boy words...I love you Diz...you're a breath of fresh air...nothing against mushy, mind you...I love you guys. Sariél
Personally, I don't mind foreign language, its the willful bastarization of whatever language with which you have chosen to represent yourself.I object to the sheer laziness involved when you can't even use full words in the TITLE of your post! It makes you look like an idiot, and I deal with enough of those in the real world. This post was not at all directed at non English speakers, or those for whom english is a second language. I shudder to think what my posts would look like on a spanish or japanese board. It would make Babelfish look like Strunk & White's. This goes out to all who can express themselves clearly, but choose not to.It took me long enough to resign myself to the use of emoticons; if you need a smiley to clarify your sentiments, you haven't made yourself clear. brother812
Sariel expresses my opinion better than i ever could. i have the utmost respect for those who post on this board who's native language is not English. but to those who's native language is English and choose to bastardize it because they are too damn lazy to type a few extra letters, then i shall choose to ignore their posts. it is not that hard to put together a well worded post and to download a spell checker. personally i can not spell to save my life that is why i downloaded the spell checker so that my fellow forum members do not have to decipher my posts to figure out the point i am trying to get across. this is one of the very few forums i have spent any time on because the members make it worth returning to. i really do not want this forum to turn into another l33t speaking flame fest forum. in the united states you have to be 18 to legally smoke, granted that means very little, but if you are going to engage in an adult activity then you could at least act and speak like an adult when you are posting about that activity. alen
i know that my english isnt the best but i really hope that you ask me what i mean if you dont understand what i write- i am not sitting with a dictionary when i write my post i have tried to learn by myself and if you see some major mistakes please correct me otherwise i wont learn since i skipped school a long time ago- and this langue some of the young guys use is really f**king it up for me beacuse for the first i am not so good on computors and i know nothing about this Eb6-u4ylj3u stuff and i havent nobody that could teach me either so as sariel and th most of the guys say -write in english please(otherwise i maybe begin writing bad jokes in swedish on all of my threads)hope i dont upset you to mush with my use of emotions i use them just to show im happy to be here with all of you good guys(hope i made myself clear) Alen
Sonthert
I am open and supportive of people speaking English as a second language (which you do very well Alen). I opposed California's "Make English the Official State Language" proposition. I speak Spanish since so many people in San Diego speak it. In terms of a website, if we adopt a common language that everyone is speaking, why would somebody (in public) type a message in a language only a few people might understand when they could do the same thing in a PM? I'm sorry I slightly misinterpreted what you were saying, Sariel
pavlakos_politakos
i do not mind the foreign language part and to tell you the truth i havent seen many posts in another language.i DO mind the abreviations and such though so for everyones sake type in PROPER English!!! --------------------------------------------------------- ELLAS!!! Sariél
Quote: dizzing just saw this post via sariel's thread about talking like in a text message... honestly, i understand the viewpoint that it can be annoying for the board to get a juvenile image. the culture that sends lots of text messages tends to be the middle school/high school "pop" culture. it's true, this culture has a very poor image with society at large, and it is not desirable for our board to be seen as such to concerned parents/teachers/authorities/whatever. realistically, however, a few people talking in shorthand here and there do not make up the majority of this board's discussion. the people who use shorthand likely do not know how to type formally and probably don't have a lot of time to devote to sitting at a keyboard at odd hours talking to strangers about their drug habits (nicotine is a drug, after all). i mean no offense to anyone, i'm just saying that it's a little overreactionary [i had to make that word up because i really can't think of one - if anyone can, let me know ;p] to start getting bent out of shape about a shorthand post here and there. afterall, everyone in this thread knew exactly what pav [shorthand] was talking about and gladly responded because the message of the original post was one of honest curiosity. to borrow and paraphrase mushrat's closing line: that's just my 2 cents... I'm not worried about what others might think. To me, its about preserving standards. I enjoy reading and participating when I feel I can make a worthwhile contribution. I would hate for it to devolve into "another l33t speaking flame fest forum" as brother812 so eloquently put it.I do not look at this style as "a few abreviations" I see it as a deliberate stylistic affectation. I may start responding in pig latin, or ROT13 for the security/paranoid/conspiracy crowd. While I've got your attention, no apologies are necessary if you disagree, it won't hurt my feelings. Sonthert
Throughout the history of language there have been traditionalists and revisionists. The revisionists almost always win.
