SimplexCoda
So Im workin on makin a hookah. I was wanting to make the downstem out of brass because of its corrosion resistance, but its hard to find hard brass around here. (for those who know hard brass is brass pipe as compared to brass tubing which is sold all coiled up and you could see how that wouldnt do my much good to make a hookah from). So I was thinkin about using copper, but I dont know how corrosion resistant it would be. Any ideas?
peterjmag
Please don't use copper. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's poisonous to smoke.EDIT: Some more info:http://www.hookahforum.com/index.php?showt...st&p=166251 Edited May 23, 2008 by peterjmag
SimplexCoda
It shouldnt be. Its not going to get hot and if they can transport drinking water in it then i dont see why it would be harmful.
Exile
Copper does not react to water, although it is corrosive. Air is different. If you leave copper at room temp, you'll get a nasty brown layer of copper oxide after some time. Did you know brass is germicidal?
SimplexCoda
its odd that its germacidal since thats what is typically used to carry hot water.
Exile
Yeah- thats why brass and copper are used for doorknobs, hospital air ducts, etc. It also prevents the air-born spread of Legionnaires disease.
SimplexCoda
I appologize Exile I misread and thought you were meaning that brass causes the growth of bacteria and germs. Now that I reread it you deffinatly said that it kills germs. Ya I have been reading different things and have kind of decided that either material would probably be ok, but if i can find the brass i will use that. Any other good thoughts or ideas would be appreaciated.

The Devils Playground
Google this 1 dude. Don`t trust me on this. But I believe Copper will work fine. Let us know when you get the hookah done. Sounds cool. If you polish Copper it turns a nice Pinkish then clear coat the Hell out it. It will look sharp.

Tikhman
copper is fine. I've used it before. The only downside, is it WILL oxidize every time you smoke and the inside of your stem will be green. Not really an issue as long as you clean/dry it right away after smoking. Frankly, just use glass.
SafeSearchOff
yeah eventually it will be green, and im pretty sure that copper oxide would not be good to inhale.go with brass.
AKammenzind
Copper is fine. Anyone who says otherwise is paranoid, or just believes everything they read I think the main reason brass was used in the first place is b/c it's more durable, and nicer looking. Personally I think a good stainless pipe would be ideal because it won't corrode, won't turn color, won't oxidize with reasonable use, and will probably just last a lot longer. Good SS piping is a lot harder to get ahold of than copper though, and significantly more expensive.
SimplexCoda
well i did finally find a place that has brass pipe for a reasonable amount of money. I just havent comitted to buying from there yet because its online and i would rather buy it local so i dont have to wait.
