Tea & Hookah?

Recommended Posts

I was wondered if there are certain teas that go better with certain flavors? I know it's a tradition to have tea and a good hookah, but which are the best. Please let me know of whats "traditional" and your personal favorites.

I think Black tea or green tea would probably be the ones that most people have and most hookah bars serve. Personally green tea is my favorite.
As far as certain teas going better with shisha flavors... I don't think it would make much of a difference. Just drink the tea you like best.

mint tea is THE traditional middle eastern tea but not from a teabag.. its made with chinese "gunpowder" tea, mint leaves, and plenty of sugar, tastes amazing.. although im not a fan of drinking it in the summer.. maybe pouring it over some ice would do something? cant get hold of any gunpowder tea though.

I never thought I'd be posting about this.

For a pot of Moroccan mint you measure out the green tea the same way you would for any other tea *but* you run the leaves under warm water before you put it in the pot, just until the leaves start to unfurl, it seems to get rid of the bitter. Put as much fresh mint into the pot as you can, don't worry it'll wilt as soon as the hot water hits it. Lots of sugar, I usually put about 1/4 c in my one person raj teapot. I'm pretty sure peets and adagio has gunpowder green tea.

next post: turkish coffee (If no one beats me to it)

*inhale* Ok turkish coffee, at least this is how I do it.

1.The coffee needs to be ground finer than espresso
2. Equal parts coffee and sugar, I usually go for 1ts-1bs each per 6oz.
3. Boil in until foamy, stir, whisk it whatever you want that foam
4. Serve

Sometimes I add some cardamom to the boil, depends on if I think company will like it.
If you don't have a special pot for turkish coffee use any saucepan.

Really, any tea is fine. Depends on the mood. For a nice mid-afternoon smoke I might go for some green, or white tea. For a morning smoke, or a long night I might make a pot of good old earl grey. Rooibos tea goes great as well Hookah.gif

I like an fruit flavored black tea with my hookah, a flavor that will complement the shisha, like a fine glass of whiskey and a cigar. Republic of tea is really good in bags...this can be found online or at wegmans. Also check out teavana.com they have great teas, its more expensive but worth the money. You can also find the Chinese gun power green tea here at teavana.

If you're looking for "gunpowder" tea then you need look no further than walmart, the dollar store or even big lots. I see it there all the time.

I personally enjoy Rasberry Gardens green tea. It's Awesome, drop a bit of honey in the bottom and you've got a treat.

Also some tea I picked up in Japan is pretty damn awesome, it comes in powder form and the instructions are in japanese so I'm not sure what's in it lol.

my personal favorite is mixing Chamomile tea (just rip open the bag and use it) few sprinkles into your favorite brand of orange shisha, makes for a magical smoke.

Chi tea works really well too for a bit of extra spice

For a Gunpowder green, I prefer a company called Numi that makes an excellent whole leaf organic tea. its in a bag, but it is probably the best tea in a bag that I have purchased locally (even better than the stuff I've gotten at the Juijing Hao Ming market down the street).

If you really want to go all out, go directly to the source and order bulk green whole leaves directly from China. I bought a pound several years ago for about $40 shipped. It was a fine tea, but kind of a hassle to brew it.

As far as the mint, I would suggest buying some at a nursery and planting it in a semi shaded damp place. Its a weed, and it will grow like crazy in the right conditions. By the end of the summer, you will have more mint that you know what to do with, and you can dry the leaves for the winter months.

Off topic kinda but kinda on Turkey Hill Blueberry Oolong Ice Tea > all existence, I love that stuff, a little too sweet for me when smoking hookah but by it's self I could go through gallons of that stuff a day. I can only get it when im out at school so it depresses me now that Im home and have to wait a few months before I can get my beloved drinks, not a type-o there are a few beers out in PA that I can only get there as well.

If you like a sophisticated tea with a delicate yet rich flavor you can't go wrong with houjicha, it is pan-fried, Japanese green tea. I find this tea to be the best compliment to nargile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hojicha Very mild and a rich woody, maybe cedar-like flavor. I just love this stuff but rarely drink it because it's quite low in caffeine. Of course I always keep some in the cupboard for those special occasions when only the best flavor will do.
