Johnny_D
I'll take a stab at this one*.I think that the No.1 Problem is discipline[1]. Since a lot of the younger generation are off-spring of the 1980's selfish self absorbed climb over anyone stab anyone in the back mentality[2] That attitude has rubbed off. With a lack of discipline comes a lack of respect and subsequently a lack of self-respect. Hence why now we have sink estates[3] where fire fighters and ambulance crews have to be escorted and police don't want to go. Chavs that know they have no come back on bad behavior[4], Murders and rapists in open prisons.Couple this with the loony left wing attutudes that ensures no one can ever be wrong and that anything that befalls one must be the fault of someone else and what you have is the past 28 years, or so, of a culture that does not care about anyone else and takes no responsibility for it's self.* - This is written with an english bias of courseJD[1] - This does not directly mean beating the crap out of them[2] - Thanks Maggie! Did everyone actually need to own there own council house?[3] - Think Harlem, or Queens or the Bronx from the 1970's (I guess, it's just what we saw on the telly!)[4] - Go 4 MPH over the speed limit though and you'll be in the stocks before sunset (Metorphically speaking)

SimplexCoda
Ok where do i start? OK I will forewarn you that I am A Christian and that I am not trying to sound preachy or make it seem like people need to have my views, but, I personally think the problem with the world today is that people do not care for other people. People try to make others be something they arent and if they will not conform then to hell with them. Like I say I am a Christian and I will be the first to say that the problem with the world is the "Christians" (I used qoutes for a reason). We tell people that they are wrong and are doing horrible things but then we turn around and do the same thing. Or if people come to our churches and they have piercings (like I do) we glare at them. We dont accpet people the way they are and if we can not accept people we will never have a true desire to make their lives better. If we dont start to show other people that they are worth something I do not want to see the world in 20 years.

But some might argue that 'Robbing' or theft stems from another problem, such as the forementioned "Greed".Simplex, what would you consider the seed of all evil according to the biblical interpretation of the fall of man? Is it the root of all evil?I can't say I agree with your statement that, "the problem in the World is the 'Christians'". Sure, organized religion has committed some horrible atrocities in the name of God, but I wouldn't say that Christians are an exclusive problem (though I realize you are referring to hypocrisy in the church). There are far worse evils than religion and hypocrisy. Edited May 26, 2008 by Exile

SimplexCoda
What I mean by this is not that orgranized religion is to blame. I say it is that people who are Christians, or any religion or lack ther of for that matter, put on a facaude that all is well with them and the rest of the world is dumb and terrible. People can not show them selves to be human and make human mistakes and such. So if they are always acting like they have it right they are acting like everyone else does not have it right. so if we cant accpet that people are people and will not accept our mistakes or theirs, we not show others that we care. SimplexCoda
ya i suck at typing. What I was trying to get a cross is that we can not accpet our selves and others for what we are are: Humans. If we dont do that we will never get to the problem of showing care for others by trying to heal their hurts. If anyone still doesnt understand just ask and I will try to clear it up cause im bad with words.
Exile
I call myself a Christian not because I choose to associate myself with other Christians, but because I believe and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.I think these judgmental, hypocritical Christians that you're mentioning are dealing with a conflict of priority. The Bible says alot of things, and the only way these people feel secure in their faith is to interpret the Bible in their own way. They avoid anything the Bible doesn't directly address, which is why they are so commonly viewed as closed-minded fools. I believe this is also party due to the conception of Christians portrayed in the media, they make us out to look like mindless, G.O.P. flag-waving morons. (And its not just Christians that suffer) Shame on the media for harassing religion, and shame on the G.O.P. for exploiting Christianity.

John Stuart Mill
We are in all probability entering a period of decline. People seem generally dissociated from their government and each other. We lack the vitality and common spirit that bound us to a collective purpose. Such periods occur in a cyclical fashion throughout history. Perhaps, the west is merely entering such a period. We have become disillusioned with our industrial progression. We fear our society, and imagine it conspires against us. We fear those outside our borders, rather than confront them with conviction. We fear sacrifice, when we live well beyond our means. Look at the wandering masses swept up in our cultural ennui. We live in an ever shrinking bubble. A system that eats its own until it can bear no more. The Russians had an isolated collapse, which occurred largely separate from the rest of Europe. Their dour desperation finds some parallels in our time. Chaadaev expressed the disenfranchisement of Russians during their decay, and it applies to us as well. "Look around you. Everyone seems to have one foot in the air. One would think that we are all in transit. No one has a fixed sphere of existence; there are no proper habits, no rules that govern anything. We do not even have homes; there is nothing to tie us down, nothing that arouses our sympathies and affections, nothing enduring, nothing lasting. Everything passes, flows away, leaving no trace either outside or within us. In our homes, we are like guests; to our families, we are like strangers; and in our cities we seem like nomads, more so than those who wander our steppes, for they are more attached to their deserts than we are to our towns..."Herzen summarized Russia's dilemma with, "No one is to blame. It is neither their fault nor ours. It is the misfortune of being born when a whole world is dying"The fate of man is sealed in the causal nature of the universe. Governed by partially understandably, if still unchangeable processes. We are but atoms in the void. Exile
I don't believe our World is dying.Men have been saying it for centuries, but it has never come to pass. He intended to indicate that Russia was heading for decline and tumult, not that the world would end. It was a period where the aristocrats were increasingly outdated, isolated and threatened. For reference sake he is an early to mid 19th century Russian author. I did say, “Such periods occur in a cyclical fashion throughout history.” I think you may have misread my piece. Just marvel at the fair market price of electricity in California. Obviously, it isn’t beneficial to have companies in systems that require a relative monopoly. Namely, electrify and water distribution necessitates a single system that should be controlled by the government. Imagine the mess of competing electric lines originating from various companies. The investment cost and infeasibility lead to a damaging monopoly after privatization. I believe government regulations can largely benefit a populace.
