Computer Help

For awhile my computer has been extremely loud. The fan was always going at high speed and the computer would be hot to the touch. Things such as Grand Theft Auto San Andreas however worked fine. Recently the computer became so hot touching the touchpad would almost burn my fingers. So I turned off my computer and blew into the fan. A huge cloud of dust flew out and then I turned it back on. It's running pretty silent right now except every couple of mintues it will lag like crazy. If I'm playing GTA SA it will run fine for about 30 seconds. Then it will start to crawl to a stop and finally stop for about 2 or 3 minutes. If I'm watching a movie it'll run fine but start crawling to a stop just like in the game. It's really annoying and I don't know how to fix it. I've tried replugging my router. I've tried restoring my computer to the friday before this happened. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

I'm not to good with computers and am kinda scared about opening up my laptop :S

I'll give you the play by play. Its nothing too complicated.

1. Unscrew your cover, remember where each screw goes.
2. Don't force anything. In fact, try to not touch anything that isn't related to the problem.
3. If you have a fan housing, remove it. Clean out the dust. (Your breath or a rag should do)
4. Put everything back together. Edited by Exile

Grow a pair or pay somebody to clean it for you, it sound's like it's overheating, this can cause serious damage. I would suggest blowing it out with compressed air, but I've heard some people saying that can do more damage as well. But first priority is to cool that puppy off; make sure it is getting good air flow and the vents are clear, test this by feeling for air coming from them. Good luck!

It's not that I don't got a pair...It's that I ain't got the money to pay for a new one if I fuck it up lol.

It's stopped being hot. Now it's the coolest I've ever felt it with the fan almost silent. I'm still getting the lag though. I'm wondering if I can maybe turn the Fan speed back up to how it used to be it might help. I don't know how to do that though.

The lag is probably hardware performance. Try toggeling the performance options in your control panel for a while. If you're using vista, turn off the animation effects and switch to the windows classic theme. You should at least free up some RAM. If your performance continues to suffer, try messing with the indexing options... or just buy a new laptop. tongue.gif

Those people are idjuts. Compressed air is just about the best way to get rid of dust in any computer.

For lag listen to what exile is saying about vista.

Can you tell us what exactly is in your Laptop parts wise?

Here's my recommendations

a) you're probably using Vista, if so install Service Pack 1, it will make your computer run much more silent and cooler
- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...a/bb738089.aspx

b ) use compressed air on all the fans (and keyboard for fun) then vacuum all over. For example I take the straight nozzle on my vacuum (the part that helps you reach places) and with my laptop off i'll put it against each fan which will pull out 80% of the dust, compressed air will loosen up the rest to vacuum it.

c) Get something called "cool feet" or build your own laptop 'stand' so that the bottom is elevated off of your desk. Also make sure you keep cleaning under your laptop, dust on the desk means dust in the fans. Edited by liquidglass

Naw I'm using Vista.
And I'll try the compressed air thing.

Thanks for helping biggrin.gif

WTF?

My suggestion was if you WERE using vista, install Service pack 1, via the link I sent you.

see how subtly i repeated myself

now if you mis typed and you meant you WEREN'T using vista, then install the last service pack for XP (SP3) Edited by liquidglass

Today I was thinking and I remember the first time my laptop started lagging.

I noticed it was extremely loud and warm so i blew into the fan and a puff of dust came out

next thing I know i hear a cranking sound come from the fan then nothing. It hasn't been to hot in awhile but today upon further examination I noticed that the fan wasn't running.
