The fan on my laptop is finally broken.

I've found a replacement for 100 dollars. I've also found a cooling pad for 20. If I were to get trhe cooling pad...Would I still need the fan?

$100 for a fan? Do you have the brand and model number of your laptop? I know on the hp's the model number is on the bottom, not sure if its like that for most laptops. $100 just sounds rediculous and I bet myself or someone here can find one for cheaper for you. As for the cooling pads, my gf has been using her HP laptop for over a year now with a targus cooling pad and no internal laptop fan running. Your results may vary though...

Well since I you just gave me the main model number and not the sub model I found out that there are 2 different fans depending on your sub model. One is $68 the other is $99. Now I've never opened up a laptop before or had to replace anything in one, but the fan setup in your laptop is tied into the heatsink for the CPU. So if you don't feel comfortable taking off the cover of your laptop then I'd suggest just taking it to a pro right off the bat as this installation is gonna be way more indepth then just 2 or 3 screws to put in a new fan since your going to have to dick with the cpu heatsink. Of course you could always just take the external cooler route like my girlfriend and hope it doesn't die. Unfortunately for my GF the damage had already been done by the heat before she bought the external cooler. Don't get me wrong it runs, but it still takes FOREVER to do anything on it.

Well there really isn't damage done now so do you think running the external cooler would keep it that way? the most demanding thing I do really is play Grand Theft Auto San Andreas which doesn't require much.

To be completly honest I would pay the cash to get the fan fixed. The only reason we didn't with my GF's is becasue the damage was done already. I wouldn't bank on an external cooler do the job of the heatsink and internal cooler. Or you could just go the new PC route....

I was also thinking of getting a new PC. I have about 350 and was thinking of building one. I need some help to know if the parts are compatible though. It has a 500GB HDD lol biggrin.gif If I do build it...it will rock

You have $350 to put towards a new computer? I think once you have about $650-$700 you'll be in a spot to put something together that will be head and shoulders above your laptop....
