ryno
Ok, lets see how well I can explain this. I've done a few google searches, and havent had too much luck on getting this to work. I have a laptop in my room that has wireless (it gets its signal from our downstairs router). I also have a desktop in my room, which I prefer to be on, well cause it has all my files. The laptop is my bros, but he doesnt use it, I just do for internet. Right now I cant even afford to go buy a wireless card for my desktop, so I was wondering if I can share the internet connection from my laptop to my desktop? Is it possible to hook them together via an ethernet cable and get the desktop to share the laptops internet?
SimplexCoda
it can be done. YOu ave to use whats called a straight through cable though. You can get one of these by buying an xbox system link cable. then you hook them up and you create a network between them and turn on the service of the internet on the laptop and it should work. Oggie505
You need a crossover cable, usually bright orange in color, can buy them anywhere. Just plug the jack into your desktop, and then into your laptop RJ45 Ethernet plug. The you just have to goto your network connection properties, and set the wireless as allow networks users to use this computers internet connection. But to be honest, the amount of money spent on a cable 5-15 bucks, you could goto eBay and buy a USB wireless stick, for about $5-$10 these days, then you will have wireless on your desktop Edited May 29, 2008 by Oggie505

vaypourus
This is called an Ad-Hoc network. This kind of thing is usually done with wireless connections, although the idea is really the same. Instead of communicating directly with a gateway, you are forwarding the traffic through the nic of another computer. Can be a real PITA if you have differing OSs on each system, as each different Windows OS handles TCP traffic a bit differently.Try looking up wired Ad-hoc networking, as well as packet forwarding. Wouldn't hurt to read about gateways as well. Edited May 29, 2008 by vaypourus
mjdx88
do you have a cable running in your room? or close by? seriously 30 bucks at most to run a cable from the wireless to your computer plus side, it will only go down when your whole connection will go down and it will always be faster.
