Sounds like you have a serious air leak somewhere. Check all your fittings & make sure everything is tight.

I was going to guess that you have a gasket leak. I would check the vase, bowl, and hose gaskets and make sure they are tight.

Also, take the cap off of your purge valve assembly and make sure that there is a ball bearing inside.

I second the air leak. Make sure your gasket between the base and the stem doesent leak. Also make sure that all your hoses are in all the way in. If you have a multi-hose and aren't using all of them make sure the cork is all the way in (that is were I have most of my leaks).

If you could somehow get the base full of smoke then with the water in it blow lightly through the hose you should be able to see where the leak is.

well if there was an air leak would i be able to get smoke without the water? wouldnt the smoke also be leaking out without the water too? the problem is the water isnt bubbling when i put the pipe in about an inch in the water. Edited by chang0000

The problem is that there is a leak. Without water you need very little pressure to get smoke, as it's easier for smoke to come through the big hole that is the downstem than the smaller holes or gaps in your seal somewhere. When water is added it makes it much more difficult (compared to no water that is) for air to come through the downstem to fill the pressure vacuum created. Air will come in through the opening with the least resistance, and without water, that is the downstem... with water, however, that is your leaks.

Plug up the top of your hookah stem with something, then blow into your hose and feel around to find out where the air leak is.

Oh, and before you do that just make sure your whole hookah fits snugly together. If it doesn't somewhere, that is your problem. In other words, make sure you use the grommets, and use the right ones in the right places. Edited by AKammenzind

alright so i went ahead and filled the base with smoke and blew out through the hose and figured out there is a leak between the stem and the base. my stem and base screw on together, any ideas on how to prevent this leakage?

You could wrap tape around the seal once screwed together, or you could take a small bit of string and wrap it into the threads before twisting together to achieve a tighter seal.
