two piece bowl help

Recommended Posts

Hey i just bought a two piece bowl.

it came with the chip on it.  There was only one left, so they
told me it would be 3$ off.  Now i have a question.  When i
put the second piece on top, it is no longer air tight and it is
unsmokable.  I took it back to the shop and spoke to the
owner.  He said first put foil over the first section, and put
tobacco on top of that and put the second section on and then foil on
top of all that for the coal.  So essentially he is saying to pack
the tobacco in the bowl with tobacco sandwiched between the foil.
His reasoning is that the foil will bunch up around the bottom peice
and make the top peice more airtight.  What do you guys
think.  If i wanted to make this setup more airtight, would you
guys suggest i permantly glue these peices togethor, and with
what?  I dont want the glue flavor/chemicals mixing with the
tobacco.  I proably should have purchased a different bowl online
but i guess its too late now, so if you guys could help me out i would
appreciate it.

Thanks

interesting...I've never seen anything like that, so im only guessing at the mechanics. Can you take a strip of foil, fold it a few times to make up for the thinkness of the missing chunk and the width of the missing piece and fold it over the effected area? Then put the outer part over and press down? Kinda filling in the spot with a temp. foil patch? no glues to cook but im not sure about getting a seal.
I'll ask around about a heat safe ceramic filler.
my $.02, anyone else?

My suggestion is masking tape, ha. Depending on the gap, if it's very small, just put a few layers of masking tape, that should do the trick. Or even, ontop of the masking tape, a big rubber band that fits tightly around (you know, the thick rubber bands used in mail rooms.)That seems like an interesting bowl. I wouldn't double layer the aluminum just for the lack of smoke. It may work and be cool but I unno, not for me. Unless you plan on mixing flavours like that ;)Cool bowl, I should start looking for one of those.Jon

We use masking tape all the time around the bottom part of our bowls when the grommets aren't thick enough. Unless you put the masking tape where the aluminum touches, you're going to be fine. Have you ever tried it to disagree?Jon

I bought one of these bowls for $4 to try it out. It came with a calvanized (toxic) mesh screen. The actual bowl depression where you put the tobacco is VERY small and shallow. You're supposed to put the tobacco in, cover it with foil, put the upper part on (clamping the foil down) and putting your coal on the foil. Then when it burns your tobacco to a harsh, hack-inducing crisp because of the bad design, toss both pieces in the trash to join the poisonous screen. Then go to myasaray.com and buy one of their bowls for $5. And pick up a good, cheap hose while you're there.
Sariel,1) how do you know that the mesh is toxic.2) why do you suggest a new hose, how do i know if mine is not good enough.
if it is galvanized then yes it is toxic and mya hoses are the ones to have i don't think he was saying get a new hose but if your on mya's site getting a bowl pick up a hose while your their because they are worth it.

jmaexx: read it again, wasn't disagreeing, was just asking if it was necessarily a good idea. More of a check if YOU had actually tried it. Sometimes things are suggested by people that haven't actually tried something that may not be a good idea in practice is all.

And ya, go with the Mya hose...

I stand corected on the toxic screen. I was told by the guy who sold it to me that it was galvanized. It has since started to show signs of rust. These bowls come with those obscenely bright colored tincan quality hookah someone posted a while back. They also have a weird autoseal hose which is not compatible with standard hoses. So feel lucky you only got jacked on the bowl, not a whole hookah. And I just suggested the hose because they are of excellent quality and dirt cheap, and its good to have a spare or two, just to smoke STRONG flavours like arc sous. Plus, I try to defer shipping costs with bigger orders.

Galvanized Steel-Zinc platedZinc is good, it is our friend, we need it in our diets to make everything run right. Galvanized steel will rust, in higher heat (like charcoal). I wouldn't know anything about Mya hoses, but I love my leather hoses. Hit like monsters. They're the best. Not an opinion, just a statement of fact, dizzing ;)Why should the air gap make a difference, it might smoke better. Just because it leaks a little shouldn't affect too much. You can always just use the bottom if the leaking does matter. I think wholesale on those is 2.25 or so...$4 off shouldn't be too bad ($4-$5)??

ok i did a little modding.

1) i ripped that damn galvanized steel sh*t mesh out.

2) i put masking tape around the inner bowl

pictures....

bottom bowl with tape

two half connected.

it is definatly air tight now, but is it safe to smoke with that tape
there?  anynone know anything about smoking masking tape?
lol..  The tape is pretty DAMN far away from the coal, so i think
it should be no problem.  Im just posting to verify.  Thanks
