HookahDuck
Im just curious, for those of you out there using Golden coals(or any quality quick light for that matter), how many do you use? I've tried to use only 1, put a ton of holes in the foil, and power puffed like crazy, and even with a small bowl and little ma'assel, I can never get enough heat. I always end up giving up on my quest, and lighting another. 2 is perfect, but I have to manage my coals pretty often... moving them around the bowl, pulling one off occasionally, ect. Its slightly frustrating to have to spend time messing with them, but it always yields the best smoke. Does anyone get away with only using 1? Sonthert
Varies with tobacco and the size of the bowl. Tangiers makes huge bowls that I personally use four Japanese blocks on. People smoking other brands out of these bowls use 6-7 (I am of course smoking Tangiers). Sometimes I will only use one and it smokes fine, even on a huge head. My friend who smokes Tangiers, but uses the traditional smaller bowl uses only one coal. What brand do you smoke?
brother812
when i am using Golden's i use 2 coals piggybacked, one on top of another. as long as i do that i have no problems with the qicklites. given the choice i use natural fingers they last longer and have less of the ass taste and the heat is easier to manage. HookahCulture
When I use them I use 2 either side by side OR I break one in half and use the one whole with the two bits around the spare spaces when the whole is sitting flatly on the screen. SUCK SLOWLY! Oh yeah, AVOID the quicklites with the minarets on the box. They're Syrian and they TOTALLY SUCK. They taste like tailpipe, don't last long because they're thin, and require babysitting to get started. Stick with Greek or Dutch ones.
jmexx
I've always found Golden's to give off less smoke. Try a box of 3kings. If you're using Goldens and you don't feel like trying another brand, break one in half and use a coal and a half. That should be ok, depending on the tobacco you smoke. Oh and don't put too many big holes, or any BIG holes for that matter. Jon
r_money
I hsve found that if you dont put the coal directly in the middle of the bowl, the taste is not as harsh, and the shisha lasts longer
Sultan of Narghile
For thickness and flavour, I poke fairly small holes in the middle of the bowl and to only the size of a charcoal. It wastes a bit of Shisha, but the smoke is so thick and flavourfull. The thick smoke is great for doing tricks. (make sure your holes aren't to big or you get burning) *yuck
Sariél
I put small holes (#33 lancet) all over the bowl, and one thumtack hole in the middle and a few around the outside. For my big bowl, I use 3kings 40mm, or for the smaller Mya bowl, a 3kings 39mm. I light the quicklights with a butane torch lighter (3 nozzle) and put it in the middle. Then I put a windcover on it, and wait for the sparks to finish. I hit it 4 or 5 times until I get full smoke, then take off the cover. I don't have to touch it again for about 30 minutes, and then repeat with a fresh coal. Perfect every time with minimal effort.
Sariél
I was using goldens, but my local shop only carries 3kings, silver japanese coals, and Diamanté fingers. The Diamante give me 48 hour migraines and make my house smell like ash.
jmexx
You smoke a head for only one coal? or a sessin of only 30 minutes? I would never get burning taste if I would do that :PJon
Sultan of Narghile
Too big of holes, overpacked shisha = Burnt Shishhh
Sonthert
I love big holes. I pack my bowls and poke the holes with an oyster fork. I have tried many models, but found the "perfect" one for me. Large holes make the hookah hit easier wehich will burn it quicker though, I agree. jmexx
Wouldn't that make the bowl unsmokeable after one coal or so?Jon
HookahDuck
well, the faster your cook the ma'assel- more coal, more puffs, ect, the faster it is going to die. However, I only smoke on weekends and I probably have about 1500g of ma'assel(I just like buying new flavors... =P), so why try to get everything out of one bowl? Its my experiance that a bowl tastes best in the first 30-45 minutes, and if kept going after that, it starts to loose taste.
