I just received some Japanese green tea and it's delicious, but that's besides the point. After making the tea, I noticed that there is some kind of "residue" for a lack of a better word, that sits on the bottom of my cup/pot. I have always wondered if it was healthy to drink this? If so, are there any health benefits?

It'd be greatly appreciated if anyone could link me to a page that would provide this information.

Edit:

I noticed that only Japanese green tea leaves the powdery substance behind as compared to other green teas. Edited by Winter

Probably the fibers that came off the leaves... Either that or some spices they used. I don't there is anything not healthy about natural green tea. smile.gif

Have you tried 'milk' tea? It's not tea with milk, it's a tea that smells intriguingly creamy and tastes quite good indeed. smile.gif

There aren't any spices in this tea, so that's out. Fibers? Maybe.

Haha yeah those things are pretty good - Chill it in the fridge or with some ice = win

I can't wait to move to Japan. Just a few months away...

I get the best tea and sushi for quite a while, I'm so excited. Tea tea tea!

Anyway, read your tea leaves/leftovers. I'll find a website.

Its just really small bits of leaves and stuff. It's fine to drink, it's organic material. I drink it all the time.

Yeah, nightshade is organic material too, but I'm sure as hell not gonna make juice with it.

That said, it's just tea residue... it's fine to drink... use some common sense.

That stuff that actually settles to the bottom is very good for you, but often has a sour/bitter taste to it.

The majority of the residue is small tea leaf particles from breaking/grinding up the leaves. In addition there are minerals, tannins, and flavonoids that settle to the bottom. Not all of the good stuff in tea dissolves in the water, and some of the stuff simply falls towards the bottom of the cup. Some of the better anti-oxidants actually sink towards the bottom too, so the bottom 1/10th of the cup of tea is supposedly the best for you.

Even whole leaf green tea will leave a little bit of particle buildup at the bottom.

There are so many kinds of Japanese Green Tea. I'm betting that the kind you got has Matcha as an ingredient and this is just finely powdered green tea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matcha This stuff is the crack of Green Tea. Very good stuff. My favorite kind of Genmaicha has matcha added to it. If it isn't matcha then it's like everyone else said just tea dust and particles and as a person who drinks a cup of Japanese Green Tea every day I can tell you the particles in the botom are fine to drink and I usually drink them if they make it into my sip.

Now, if you enjoy Japanese Green Teas and the particles at the bottom aren't your thing I really like this one type called Kokeicha http://www.tealaden.com/product/kokeicha--japanese-562.cfm <---best I could do for info. It's essentially tea noodles and it is less likely to release alot of particles in the water than the others. It has a unique flavor and I recommend it anyways. Also I like to call it cocaine-cha because it does kind of pack a punch if you are sensitive to caffeine like I am.
