El Cheapo Coals Covered In Silver Stuff > Safe To Use?

Recommended Posts

I got some el cheapo coals from a local shop when I got some Al Fakhir cola as they didnt have anything else, the box just reads "Easy-Lite" and some arabic writing "54charcoal tablets".

their covered in silver stuff though, generaly my quicklights are just black, are these safe to use or are they designed for things other than hookah?

sure, give 'em a shot, just make sure you get the silver funk off before you smoke. i've never used the silver coals, but everyone says to make sure they're fully lit with no silver flaky stuff.
but someone else will tell you the same thing

The silver stuff helps them light easier than other natural coals. I used them for a while, same brand you have. They're pretty good, but just like everyone says, light them fully and ash off if any silver remains.

i love the easy lites in the 96 piece black and orange box that say "easy-lite" on them they are second only to coco-naras and 3kings are a close 3rd

Really I find that the easy-lite brand splinters too easily and breaks apart easily when ashing. One exploded on me when I was holding with tongs and minimal pressure. I much prefer golden canaries when it comes to the jap coals.

i had that experience about a year ago but they have cleaned up their act so to speak now and are great coals

Nick's right. I've gone through 100's of boxes of these in the past couple of years and I've had...2, maybe, boxes that were bad.

The silver coating is a magnesium in most cases and is not super harmful but it is a smart idea to burn it all off before you put it onto the bowl. You wont get poisoned from it but i can imagine its good for you. Its used to help aid lighting the charcoal as well as keeping the product looking clean.

The japanese style brick charcoal "quick-lites" seem to ahve good batches and bad batches. They always light consistently but some times ash differently. Many a time i have had them ash dark gray and very clumpy which was a mess as well as some parts of the coal splinters off when fully lit making the bowl taste like ass. Also some times they dont pack them in plastic which really is lame cause of all the coal dust inside the box.

Starlight japanese charcoal and golden charcoal are some of the best ive ever used.

fair enough; well I tried to light one of these with a lighter but even after quite a while it wouldnt lite, I left it on my ash tray and completely forgot about it.... later in the day I came back and it had completely burned out haha. should I be heating these up with the oven or something?

yeah, the coals you have are not quicklights which can be lit with matches or a lighter. japanese style coals, like natural coals need a constant heat source like an stove or torch.

Huh... I'm still fairly new to hookah, so forgive me if this is a silly question, but--how do these Japanese coals stack up against natural coals? My friend and I usually use the 3 Kings for quicklites and Exoticas for naturals, & a propane torch to light.

I think you should try Pharaoh. Might be a little pricey at your smoke shop but if you seriously want a no hassle self start charcoal..try them. Their in a gold wrapper and I usually use 2 then break them in half before I light them.

i honestly dont notice much of a difference between "quick-lite" japanese charcoal and exotica natural charcoal. The n aturals a little messier, but same smoking quality in my experience using phunnel bowls.
