Cleaning Phunnels...

Recommended Posts

I've had trouble tasting the shisha and think I can attribute the problem to my phunnel bowls retaining the taste/odor of previous smoke sessions. I wash my pipe pretty regularly, change my water for every new bowl, and let my tobacco acclimate well (as I smoke almost only Tangiers). I also use a washable Razan hose. I can't see the problem being one of those, which leaves me with my bowls. I clean them out after every session, usually with a solution of water and vinegar. Though, even after that, they seem to retain a smell, usually of smoke/coal.

How do you guys clean your phunnels? Tonight I boiled them in a solution of water and baking soda; perhaps that'll due. But if anyone had another suggestion or has solved the same problem, let me know. Also, if you think I've gone wrong somewhere else, of course lemme know too.

hmm...havent had that problem with my phunnels. Let it sit overnight after cleaning it. if you are having problems with taste being weak shouldn't be your bowl killing the taste.

I use my dishwasher. It has a sterilize setting. I just toss the phunnel in and turn it on to that setting and all is peachy keen.

So when you smoke, do you get a foreign taste (i.e a strawberry taste when you're smoking mint) or do you taste nothing?

I posted this a while ago. MR. CLEAN Miracle Pad works wonders. I clean the shish out with hot water and a regular sponge then use the Mr. Clean pad and you can see the black on the sponge!!

Clarification needed.

You said you can't taste the shisha. Is that what you mean or are you getting residual flavor? Left over flavor will not cancel out the new flavors just muddy them.

Yeah, clarification is needed. There is a biiiiiiiiig difference between no flavor and residual flavor.

Once the bowl cools down, I'll take it to a sink and use the aluminum foil to scrub the inside of the bowl. Whenever I'm doing a deep cleaning of the hookah I'll soak it in a baking soda and water mix, and then rinse it with water, and then soak it in a lemon juice and water mix, and rinse again.

Thanks for all of the feedback... My problem, for the record, was not NO taste, but coal taste. Sorry for the confusion.

Good news is that I -think- I solved my problem.

awesome to hear jason.one thing i hate about hookah is so many things can be a problem you gotta do trial by fire to fix problems.what coals were you using?

Not yet fully lit insta-lights. JK! I use either Japanese coals (Canarys or similar, once they're not wrapped together in the box, as Eric taught me, and say "made in Japan), or Coco Naras.
