mikeypas
Hey! Got my new setup yesterday, Mya Colossus, Nammor hose, mnh jet phunnel, coconarasso i tried AF and tangiers in the phunnel, packed it liked described in the video (scoop method), started off great but smoke quantity/thickness tapered down after 45 mins. i used 2 coconaras then added another after an hour. still smoke super thin.just wondering how long a typical bowl should last (with thick smoke), how many coals to use (coconaras).. any suggestions?[as far as technique, the hookah is airtight, the phunnel was overfilled, tried with the stock mya bowl too, didnt last past 1 hr even adding coals]sorry if this topic was brought up before, just trying to figure out how to extend me smoke past 1 hr. my cheap little chinese one with 3king coals lasted longer!thanks in advance, mike
dom209
well phunnel bowls smoke for a long time... but tend to take alot of heat to keep the thick smoke cuz it doesnt heat the shisha in the same way as a egypitan bowl... so try keeping 3 or 4 good size coal around the edge of it and change them fairly often, but when done right i usually get good thick smoke for about an hour and a half and fairly decent smoke for another 30-45 min after that... just experiment with the heat... a phunnel bowl tends to use alot of coal by the time yoyr done with the session but in my oppinion its well worth the few extra coals for such a good smoking session... hope that this helped, and have fun with that new hookah
mikeypas
very helpful dom, thanks! i've been using only 2 coconaras, then when the smoke died down, i added another.. i think i should start with 3, and put 2 more before the smoke goes thin.. Maybe use a windcover in the very begining to heat the bowl up quicker.

SuburbanSmoker
you can get them to last for a couple hours no problem. Only thing is after a while the flavor is kinda shitty and its nice to switch things up a bit.

Chiefin
On monday I smoked Fantasia - Pink Lemonade in a medium Tangiers Phunnel (~50 grams worth) and it lasted around 2-3 hours with the smoke losing flavor and density in the last 10-15 minutes. I used 4 quick lites (all I had) with a computer fan grate on top of the foil with coals on top of that. I cycled about 4-5 more coals up there throughout the whole session. I find that heat regulation is the most important thing with the phunnel's staying power. The tendency is to add more coal than you need because it takes a little longer to get going. I poke smaller holes in the foil than I would in an egyptian because you don't have to fight to pull air through the tobacco to get to the stem by design. Try and keep whatever coals you have, be it cocos or quicklites, close to the edges. Also, try not packing as much into the phunnel so that it isn't as close to the foil. I may be completely off about all of this, but it works well for me. If the top layer of sheesha gets scorched initially, it sometimes ruins a bowl for me. Does anyone poke a hole in the foil over the phunnel air shaft? I don't, but any thoughts here? Edited June 27, 2008 by Chiefin
mikeypas
hmm, most ppl recommend overpacking the bowl and compressing down the tangiers.. i'm still experimenting!personally, the smoke is thick almost instantly.. 3 puffs and its going full steam.. i never have issues with flavour, even after 1 hour etc.. its just the smoke is really thin and i cant get it to go back full steam again (no pun intended) even after adding freshly lit coals

I found that if when you poke holes, poke all the way down to the bottom of the bowl. Should help let some heat get down and not just burn the top. I started at Eric's at 8 or so, got a bowl nearly immediately and smoked through two games of Yatzee and a movie. I can't recall what I smoked that night, but whatever it was, by the 7.5 mark, the flavor had left nearly completely but a sweet, sorta bubble-gum flavor took over. When I asked Eric if I was just imagining things, he told me that I had burned through nearly all of the tobacco, leaving only pure glycerine, which appearntly tastes like I had described. He said that only happens after truly long sessions - 8+ hours. I was smoking out of one of his large bowls, to be sure. For the previous six nights that week, I had smoked no less than 6-7 hours out of a large bowl (a different flavor every night, sometimes two!). Just FYI - if anyone is looking for a new flavor - I tried Tangiers Spearmint, which ended up being one of my favorites. It smoked quite sweeter than standard mint, which, to me, meant a more "balanced" taste, (i.e., not just straigt-up mint-ness).I haven't been able to replicate that session, mostly because I never smoke beyond two hours by myself (as I get bored). If it happens again, I'll let you all know.
