Allergic Reaction To Fumari?

Recommended Posts

I recently bought some Fumari shisha. I sat outside and smoked with my bro and some friends. My bro all of a sudden got really hot and started sweating a lot. He decided to go in the house and lay down. He felt like crap the entire rest of the nite. We didn't really think anything of it. Thought maybe it was dehydration. So last night we decided to smoke it again. The same thing happened to him. Anybody else heard of this happening? He's smoked Tangiers, Romman, and Starbuzz with no side effects.

could be a difference in products used to make it...dif type of glycerin, honey or molasses, food coloring...the list goes on, I'd focus on those to find the criminal entity

My friend is allergic to anything thats berry.

Every time he smoked a mix that had berry in it, he would get red and start itching himself. lol. He has learned his lesson since.

hmmmm I had the same effects when I smoked some Nakhla Double Apple and I think it was because it was dry. Could be the issue however you said you have recently bought it. ]

i'm no doctor, but those arent the symptoms of an allergic reaction. if he broke out in hives, or his throat swelled up and couldn't breath, thats an allergic reaction.
diphenhydramine (benadryl) is used to stop the effects of an allergic reaction, i say, turn him into a guinnea pig.
have him pop a couple benadryl and try again. if it doesn't happen it could be 2 things;
1- wierd allergic reaction was prevented by benadryl
2-placebo's are the most powerful drug known to man.

Something similar has happened with me. I don't believe it's allergic but a reaction to a sudden influx of nictoine

Is he a regular smoker?

As a person with allergies my vote goes towards nicotine. Fumari to me seemed to have alot of it too and would get my heart racing unlike other brands.

Another vote for nicotine. The same thing happened to me when I was 16 and decided to inhale a cigar...

I also get it a bit less (I just feel warm and a bit nauseous) if I smoke Nakhla too much as I'm not a regular smoker and my body hates the nicotine.

As someone who has bad allergies, and a biochemistry major, here is my 2 cents.

He probably had a reaction to the nicotine. Keep in mind, nicotine is an alkaloid compound that the tobacco plant manufactures for protection. Essentially, it is a natural defensive compound that is toxic. Now, most of us have become accustomed to the nicotine so we don't have a strong reaction. But in high doses it can have negative effects and is even lethal. I would suggest he eases into it more so, versus hitting the ground running.

An easy way to tell if it is an allergic reaction is to touch a small sample of the shisha on his skin, preferable a soft patch such as the backside of the upper arm. Most people will develop a slight red rash in the affected area if they are allergic to the substance. I highly doubt he is allergic to glycerine, which is an organic molecule highly used in the pharmaceutical industry, or molasses. I'm not sure if fumari uses food colorings, although there are some colorings that could be potential allergens, although this is highly unlikely, as most food colorings require extensive testing before they are allowed for commercial usage.
