yashman19
I've used natural bulk once before, and didn't like em much. If you want to get them hot and stay hot, gotta either use a torch or a stove...Well, lighting most coals except for quicklights require a torch or stove, but you really need to get it hot for a while. I've made the mistake of taking it off too early because it looked lit, but to find out 10 minutes later that the coal is out again... Mushrat came up with his own little contraption that gets bulk coals hot, and sort of traps the heat. I can't think of the thread name it was in, but I'm sure he will stop by and point you in the right direction
jmexx
I use 3 kings normally. I'll use the extra Golden coals if I run out of the 3kings I have. I also have tried some 3king knock-offs when we had our coal drought here. My first order from Arguily.com includes starlight coals, I saw them in a nut shop here the other day and decided to give em a shot. Hmmm, hopefully my Arguily.com order comes in before New Years, some of that stuff could be helpful.Happy holidays everyone!Jon
Sonthert
I've lit natural coals on a hot plate, many people use a blowtorch. If you want to light them using a stove or hot-plate, make a pile of them...the best ones are going to be in the center...flip them over a few times when you are lighting them...a lit coal will have a light dusty ash all over it and be a bright yellow color. Coals that are burning red or orange are not fully lit.
mushrat
I do it about the way tangiers describes...hit each one with the torce for a bit, then stack em in a pile...sometimes I'll hit the pile itself with the torch. If you have a nice pile, you can add more coal later and with a lot less effort they catch as well... Though I'm thinking of trying some nour's.... dizzing
just saw this post via sariel's thread about talking like in a text message...honestly, i understand the viewpoint that it can be annoying for the board to get a juvenile image. the culture that sends lots of text messages tends to be the middle school/high school "pop" culture. it's true, this culture has a very poor image with society at large, and it is not desirable for our board to be seen as such to concerned parents/teachers/authorities/whatever. realistically, however, a few people talking in shorthand here and there do not make up the majority of this board's discussion. the people who use shorthand likely do not know how to type formally and probably don't have a lot of time to devote to sitting at a keyboard at odd hours talking to strangers about their drug habits (nicotine is a drug, after all). i mean no offense to anyone, i'm just saying that it's a little overreactionary [i had to make that word up because i really can't think of one - if anyone can, let me know ;p] to start getting bent out of shape about a shorthand post here and there. afterall, everyone in this thread knew exactly what pav [shorthand] was talking about and gladly responded because the message of the original post was one of honest curiosity.to borrow and paraphrase mushrat's closing line:that's just my 2 cents... [LB]
i have a question for all the hookah smokers who use natural caol(those big chunks of black wood-lol). how in hell do u lite them?!?!?!? i have sum but every time i try lighting em i end up an hour later still with no coal.
since its winter and cold, i will make a fire in my fire place, then come down and collect the giant embers in my oversized charcoal dish the throw them right on my bowl. its the best way, the charcoals are so hot and they cool down as soon as your session is over, but heat up as you keep plugging. you cant pause though or they die, try makin a fire in your fire place!
