Sad Lonely Hookah

Recommended Posts

I was talking to my sister about hookah and besides the normal misconception about hookah being drug related she shared with me that her fiance, who is Lebanese, has a hookah that has been passed down for generations. I got super hyped untill she told me that it just sits there as decoration. There goes that chance to bond.

I'm still excited to see it but does anyone have an opinion on the issue? I can't help but think, as a smoker, that it's slightly disrespectful to break tradition like that while I do understand that one must make his own choices. Then again I'm not of a culture in which I can directly relate. Maybe it's just envy.

Also, any family heirlooms in the forum? And if your family partakes together in the hookah ritual how have your experiences been? Just curious. Edited by giant ninja robot

Surprisingly, I don't think it would bother me that much. If I gave my hookah to my kids, and they gave to there kids and so on and so forth, I would just be happy that they still have my hookah. Its not a "fuck this I don't want to smoke it" its a "this was my ancestors, lets put it where everyone can see it", imo.

agree with JD on this one. It would depreciate it especially if it hasn't been smoked ever or in a long long time. Just take your hookah over, fire it up and ask to look at their hookah because you appreciate art, which is what they view it as from what you've said.

Appreciating a heirloom and knowing what it's really for is a great bonding chance, so still bonding there, just a different path.

Its an heirloom I have something like that in my basement and my parents are Lebanese, it is something passed down and I wouldn't smoke out of it. It serves as a remembrance of ancestors and a culture that has been going back for a LONG time.

It isn't worth the risk of damaging it. You have a hookah. Hookahs really aren't that expensive. It isn't worth damaging a piece of art someone has passed down through their family for generations. And if I had to bet on it, I doubt it would smoke as well as a modern hookah anyways.

I didn't even think about the durability and age issues mellow.gif , thanks for the perspective. I'm really looking foward to see it and if i get the chance i'll post a pic whenever that happens.

Looks like I've got a date to smoke with my Mom. Didn't think that would ever happen. laugh.gif

My dad's gotta hookah that just sits there for decoration. He got it from his dad who used to smoke, but quit for health reasons.

It's a beautiful one, too... Very old.

We're all Palestinian. It doesn't bother me that it just sits there... it's kind of nice actually.

I know many people from the Middle East that have Hookahs just for decoration and for smoking. I think thats how they like it! Hookah.gif
