modisess
I've always put ice in my base during a session but yesterday my friend said that the ice actually dulls out the flavor. So i got to thinking, can this be true? I never did a session without putting ice in the base but i might actually try that soon enough. Will that actually help with the flavor? Scoop
yes, ice dulls out the flavor. its true. with tangiers it nearly fully kills the flavor plus ive heard the horror stories of really nice vases breaking and getting stress fractures from the ice...room temp for me

Big Boss
When I first started smoking, I'd put ice in the base. Just like Scoop said, it kills the flavor. I use cold water from my faucet. Works well enough.
j3oomerang
is it ice or cold temperature water that kills the flavor? If you put your hookah into a bucket and then fill the bucket with ice, will that rob flavor (no ice in the vase)?
Big Boss
The cold temperature, IMO.
modisess
thanks for the feedbacks. now i wont have to worry if i have any ice left for a session.
vin13
I'll play devils advocate I almost always put a good portion of ice in the base, only using just tap if I'm smoking Tangiers. Even with the ice I usually get plenty of flavor and it smooths it all out a bit more imo.

I have since read that ice is good for thick clouds, but bad for flavor. I decided that I prefer flavor, and not breaking my bases any more, so no more ice for me. Nabiscuit
When I smoked Tangiers with Room Temperature water, it almost burned the back of my throat. It was so harsh I couldn't stand it. Usually I put about ten cubes of ice in my bases... then again - i have a REALLY big base - Egyptian 30 inch.Smoke is too hot without a little ice.... But I use A LOT less ice for Tangiers than I do for anything else.

I don't feel like the flavor difference is drastic enough to justify not using ice. If your shisha is good, you'll get great flavor regardless. It's a matter of preference - I have a syrian chiller...and I put ice wherever I can. I like my smoke cold...
modisess
wow, first time using room temp water in the base and all i can say was that the flavors really came through much more than when i used cold water + ice. really recommend it to anyone who has flavor problems. Stuie
I honestly have never noticed that big a difference. when I smoke out of the Mini Mya, i but the whole hookah and the fridge. Smoke some Tangiers or Romman, Flavor is strong and so smooth i just fall asleep on the couch!
hookah hippie
I've heard it effects the flavor but I couldn't image how much it actually does
Codename067
I pit ice once in a while during summer days. the smoke is noticeably cooler. never had issues with cracking..been 3 summers?
OC4111
I did a comparison with ice in the base and no ice in the base with lucid cocoa. I like the flavor with the ice alot more, imo it was cooler and tastier.
Anxiety
i really don't see how ice can ruin the flavor, break the vase i guess that could be some sort of freak accident but imo ice makes the smoke alot cooler and more enjoyable, i suppose it's about prefrence?...but ive definatly never had flavor issues and I always use ice, and ice cold water (i put a pitcher of water in the freezer for like 15 mins b4 i pour it into the vase)
Voski
I usually do it when it is very hot outside. The smoke is a lot cooler and it feels awesome when you let it seep out all over your face.
TBatcho07
I personally enjoy ice in the base..But I could see where it would kill the flavor somewhat and also cause the base to crack if it became too chilled.
imfantabulous
I can't see how everyone thinks ice in the base kills flavor. I've had it both ways with every brand I've ever smoked and each time ice in the base leads to thicker smoke and more flavor, especially with tangiers. If you ask me you all are crazy. j3oomerang
I know some of you guys have multiple hookahs. Has anyone taken one hookah and setup two bases, one with ice and one without, and switched the stem back and forth between the two bases to see if it had any effect on taste? If not, is anyone willing to do this? I would use the same stem and bowl on both bases so that the testing is uniform. Maybe move back and forth 3-4 times throughout the session and see what happens with the flavor.
momatik
I've always smoked with ice.I always put my stem in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes before a session too.I've always found it enjoyable. But I am bias since I've never really tried it otherwise. I'll try room temp one of these days.
findlaytennis
I have used ice whenever its available for my base and like the cooler smoke that I get. No problems with either base after a year of solid use in all weather conditions
liquidglass
People that lose bases over putting ice in them only happens because they weren't paying attention. I've broken drinking glasses before that way, but NEVER a base. So first hopefully you don't have a thin ass base, next yes you want to rinse out your base but if you use really hot water then use progressively cooler water, so (hot, hot, hot/warm, warm, warm/cold, cold) or at least put warm water around it so the base isn't so hot that the ice gives it stress fractures. I've never had problems with ice in my bases, so just be careful and you should be ok.As far as the flavors go, that's interesting, I'm going to try using room temp water with my tangiers. However I have stopped using ice with any flavors, I keep a gallon or three of water near freezing in the back of my fridge, so I just use them I find it negates using ice and with my thick base it stays cold for a few hours.
