euroautolover
My girlfriend told me that she read that you can get alzheimers from cooking on aluminum grills. 1) is this true? and 2) can this happen with the aluminum that separates the tobacco and the coal? ilikemyusername
i think you get it from not exercising your brain enough, puzzles things like that, i once read about a colony of nuns that worked on mind benders 8 hours a day, and they lived to be an average age of 104 and no alzheimers.i have a book by pierre berloquin called 365 exercises for the mind.in it theres a puzzle wich has baffled my for over 3 years.theres a large square, and in this large square are 3 different sized squares, 6 different sized triangles and 5 different sized circles.these shapes are all just randomly thrown together and many of them intersect with each other some of them are inside of other shapes, very chaotic.anyway the question goes as such..."if the squares were circles, the circles were triangles and the triangles were squares, how manycircles would intersect a triangle?squares would be within a circle?triangles would enclose a square?we're born with a set ammount of neurons, and they die as we get older, and the older we get the more neurons die.by doing puzzles we cause our glial cells to multiply and keep neurons from dieing.thereby fighting alzheimers.i don't believe in anything the media says, i believe in science.and i dont believe in spell check, capitolization or bigfoot. Tempest72
Aluminum is known to give you Alzheimer’s like problems. I am using some sort of ‘Hookah Foil.’ Do not really know the name…and don’t think I could read the package. But I have never gotten the foil hot enough to melt, or vaporize. Discolor a bit, yes, but it seems that I always have the same amount that I started with. If it was getting hot enough to get brittle, I would be more worried. Do not think that the foil is really a problem. You also do not hear about the ‘horrors of Alzheimer’s’ in countries that traditionally smoke hookah. I also think that the tobacco is a bigger baddie than the threat of aluminum poisoning. If you really are worried, go to http://www.smileysultimatehookah.com/ and buy the glass bowl and glass screen set up. I never tried them, but no metal would be involved. That would take the worry about the aluminum away.
Johnny_D
Smiley, to my current knowlede, is no longer in the game. There has also been links between tea and alzheimers. It's also a possible genetic link.I highly doubt the coal gets hot enough to cause problems. Cooking with foil is fine so I guess smoking with it is fine also. This subject comes up about once every 5 months. Regular as clockwork.JD

vaypourus
My grandmother is currently dying of Alzheimers. Its a pretty awful thing...That being said, I have read up on this quite a bit. The link between aluminum and alzheimers is a murky one; because the disease hits later in life, it hasn't been studied enough earlier in life ot really tell. Additionally, most of the people who have been studied are 60+...and 60 years ago, aluminum wasn't nearly as common as it is now. Most of the studies I had read say that aluminum isn't as much of a contributing factor as is poor lifestyle and genetics. It's on both sides of my family, so I am probably screwed.Keep in mind that the biggest contributor of aluminum to the human body is underarm deodorant anti-perspirant (aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate, and aluminium-zirconium) . If you are that worried, you had better get used to sweating and BO :X
hookah hippie
I imagine the foil actually has to melt which under the heat of coals won't actually happen I believe. If you are really worried by a screen even though they suck
Scoop
for you to inhale particles of Al you don't need to melt the foil. particles will come off with some heat. however only a small part will vaporize (since youre not actually melting all of it). Also, I use Tom of Maine Deodorant, the non-aluminum, non-paraben. Tempest72
I just looked it up. The melting point of aluminum is 1220.58 °F. I do not think my coals get even close. My hookah would explode.

So if something is at 500 degrees, some particles are at 700 degrees, some are at 200, a couple may be at 1200, but the point is a temperature is actually a kinetic average. So let's say a coal burns at 600 degrees farhenheight. Well, chances are only a tiny percentage would even be nearly hot enough to be in the liquid phase, and would quickly convert back to the solid phase, back and forth back and forth. Anyways, if aluminum boils at 4566 degrees farhenheight, the chance that an object with a 600 degree temperature has a substantial percentage of molecules with enough kinetic energy is extraordinarilty small. Even if a standard deviation is 100 degrees, you are talking about almost 40 standard deviations from the mean. And I don't know how many of you take statistics, but that is negligible. fifthmanstanding
It's also been linked to the aluminum salts used in deodorants. One theory is that the reason it's such a high rate of the disorder in the last few generations is that deodorants using AL salts didn't exists before the 40's. Alzheimer's patients have show brain scans with 60-80% more AL in the brain than that of the average person.

Rani
This is the medical opinion I've heard.... Again, disclaimer about not personally being a doctor, but it makes sense. Your body is made to function and perform and survive. To do so it needs a variety of vitamins and minerals many of which include metals like copper and zinc. Because your body needs these minerals to continue functioning, if not enough of the mineral it's looking for is available it will plug in molecules from what metals are available. So if you're missing copper molecules and you're taking in aluminum from your anti-perspirant for instance then yes, having nothing else available it will add the aluminum to the molecular chain so you can keep functioning and surviving. Eventually you build up too much of the wrong metal and it has an adverse effect. So it would appear that the problem isn't too much aluminum in your body but to little of the right minerals it needs forcing it to make substitutions that are unhealthy in the long run.'Rani
