patio87
The only times I have smoked hookah was at a bar, and once and my friend's house. I know that 2 of the times we were smoking Nakhla Double Appl, which I remember was pretty good. Basically I am wondering what are the brands and how do they differ from each other? I also see this Soez herbal that says it has no tobacco in it, so I am wondering what that stuff is, and is it any good. Also where should I buy my shisha? Do I need to always buy the special charcoal, or is there a quick alternative you can pick up at walmart or something? The last time I went and smoked I remember after 10-15 minutes of smoking that the back of my throat started to itch everytime I exhaled, I believe it became pretty uncomfortable too(it was a year or so ago so I don't remember that well), what is the cause of this? I can't remember if it happened the two times I smoked the Nakhla, I'm not sure what the brand was when this happened either. Thanks for any help with this. Doubon
Stay away from charcoal that is for use with grills and bbq's etc. Use coals that are specially made for hookahs or natural coals. Also stay away from Soex, that shiz is nasty .As for the sensastion in the back of your throat... it was probably harshness. using the 'search' function should help to answer most of your questions and there is a 'new members' sticky that gives you info on the set up. filmigeek
Hey patio - Welcome! I am a newbie too and when I first got my hookah I learned a TON by reading the sticky threads at the top of this form. You can also get a great sense of shisha brands and charcoal brands by reading the reviews section and just by reading the first couple of pages worth of threads here in the hookah discussion forum. There are tons of on-line vendors for hookah stuff - you'll quickly figure out which are the popular ones just by reading threads and seeing what comes up.Finally if you type "hookah" into YouTube you will get tons of videos demonstrating how to set up a hookah. Great stuff.Just spend an hour or two reading and browsing around and you will come out totally fired up to get yourself some equipment and start smoking. Stuie
First Welcome to the Forum!Soex is made from Sugar Cane Bagasse. Don't smoke it. If you want to smoke Herbal try Hookah Hookah Black Label.Favorite Retailers around here areHookah-Shisha.comMNHookah.comHookahCompany.comNazarHookah.comThere are other good retailers you find when reading threw the forum, these are just the top.You will find several brand people love and cling to when it comes to shisha. Some good brands that most people like areNakhlaTangiersAl FakherStarbuzzRommanFantasiaPotionWith most people here we have all kind of switched to natural coals, but we do keep Quicklights around for traveling in stuff.Quicklight CharcoalGoldenThree KingsNatural CharcoalCoco NaraHookah Company's Coconut CoalsExoticaJapanese Coals (4 squares per stick, not 3)There could be a few different ways to correct the tingle in your throat. Best way to learn here is ASK. But give a lot of specifics on how you set up your hookah so we can help narrow down the problem. And again welcome, hope you like it here! SuburbanSmoker
Welcome to hookah! Since your new i would recommend going out and buying some 3 king quick lights, or akhla quicklights along with alfakher/nakhla/layalina/al waha tobaccos. They are pretty hard to mess up and offer alot of good flavor. Dont fall for the "premium" tasg brands put on, just making you pay for the name. Check the vendor section and reveiw sections to see what people have said about different stuff and above all use the search bar before you ask questions. patio87
Thanks for the help everyone. What about hoses? The hoses that are coming with my hookah are going to be cheap, how important are the hoses? Is a good hose really important?
greeknate88
QUOTE (patio87 @ Jul 18 2008, 06:46 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Thanks for the help everyone. What about hoses? The hoses that are coming with my hookah are going to be cheap, how important are the hoses? Is a good hose really important?A good hose does make a difference. But the best hose on a bad hookah isn't going to change the fact that its a bad hookah. Also, with hoses, as everything, theres a law of dimishing returns. If you are new, you're best off just buying a decent hose, not a fancy one. Because there are a lot of startup costs involved and that is something you can always upgrade later. SuburbanSmoker
+1 learn to smoke right and once you get everything down upgrade to a better hookah and better hoses. and remember if its orange shit coming out of your hose through it in the garbage cause you got yourself one rusty sailor. HAHkoo
For hoses i would recommend a MYA hose that is wooden tipped, only because its washable and very durable and doesn't restrict the air flow from your hookah. Plus since its a very good hose when you upgrade your hookah you can still use the same hose. And hookahforum has a very expansive section dedicated to reviews: coal, tobaccy, etc. i highly suggest you check that out to find a good tobacco for you. hookah hippie
If I were you I would buy yourself a washable hose as stated and then set up a bowl you will only get better with practice
patio87
Thanks everyone, the one I have is coming comes with hoses, which I know are going to suck, but what does it mean if they are washable or not? How are some washable and others not? Also how does Al - waha or Al - sultan compare to the brands named by Stuie?
Bulldog_916
Buy yourself a decent hookah and use the hose that it comes with. Once all that is square and your confidence in your packing ability is high, then upgrade your hoses and bowl and shisha. That's the way I would do it. Giant Ninja Robot
That is hilariously exactly what is happening to me! Got the phunnel, waiting on cash for the coals, shisha, and a QT, then i guess we'll see about a KM eventually...Hey patio - Welcome in, for the record - Sultan sucks. It was my first brand cuz it was local and cheap and it really is cheap. Burns easily, iffy flavors, etc. It's an emphatic no in my book.
