I usually have to saw through them with a cerraded knife and it leaves a huge meess. then i tried to just using my hands and the coal basically exploded. Any suggestions? jezter6
If you score it slightly with a knife and then break apart it should crack right down the line.Every once in a while though I still get the imploding coal where it just shatters into 100 unusable pieces. Any suggestions? You know that useless metal poker on the end of metal tongs. Insert that in the middle of a 3K coal, press hard. Voila, it breaks into 2-3 pieces with minimal mess. A lot of times they fly a couple feet away when they break, but not much residue or dust, so thats good...
hookah hippie
take a serrated knife and cut through it a little bit and then press hard with the knife will split it in two

They explode on me after lighting and breaking them... i get less mess when I hammer Golden quicklights. Switch to Coconut or Japanese Coals no cutting needed, sometimes just breaking. NarghileNights
hard to explain - use both hands, thumb and forefinger, twist opposite ways until it pops into two halves.takes practice!
SuburbanSmoker
score the middle with a knife or screwdriver and snap it in half. Due to the composition of QL they are going to explode and leave their load all over the place. Ultimately would suggest switching to other coals for superior functionality and quality. nupC
what i do is put the coal on top of a napkin then just put a knife on the coal where i want it to be cut and apply pressureworks 90% of the time, well atleast for the 40mm it does dont know about the 33mm

OC4111
Have you tried breaking the coal after it's been lit? That would be a whole lot easier.

Majid
All you need to do is use the side of your tongs/a knife with cerrated edge to saw into them a little bit in the middle, then snap them in two.
