Stuie
Okay so apparently I hit the stupid wall.Switching to phunnels a couple months ago I loved it. But now when i put on the second set of coals about 70% of the time ash falls into the phunnel through the holes in the foil and the smoke becomes so harsh it's unsmokable. So here is what I am thinking. I guess I might be getting two lazy, I only move my coals one maybe twice during the first hour.My hole pattern is a circle around the outer edge and just around the hole in the phunnel.Seeing the glass screen that Snoopy has, could i just put holes strictly over the hole in the phunnel and let the coals sit longer.Let me know what you do, because it's kind of driving me nuts. I use Coco Nara Coals now, just got some japs to try. Could use a little help.

I break my coals in half so that none of the coal sits directly over the center hole. It has helped prevent ash from entering my stem/hose thus far. Stuie
it's not in the stem, but falling into the tobacco. So the moment heat reapplies...it's like smoking a phunnel full of ash.

I rotate them fairly often. I poke holes using a toothpick and go all the way down. I never have a problem with the smoke tasting like ash. Try rotating your coals or ashing them more often. Thats what I do and I haven't had any problems yet.
OC4111
Ash the coals more often. The awesom thing about coco naras is that you can leav them sitting on the bowl and you don't lose much heat even after they've been sitting a while. But, if you move them after they've sat a while then a decent bit of ash can build up.
Stuie
Thanks OC, that's what I figured but I am just being lazy. My couch is so deep and with the obelisk being pretty tall, i have to stand up, it's hard to get out of the couch and ash the coals. Just being lazy i know. But I may try a similar thing to the glass phunnel screen that MNH did for Snoopy.Hope we can get those when they come back in stock!
Stuie
I am guessing because i went from traditional bowls and quicklights to phunnels and naturals I am just not use to it still...it's getting hard but I remember the days when the coals when out the bowl was done. Giant Ninja Robot
thanks for bringing this up stuie, I think I've been having the same problem but i just attributed it to burning not ashing even though the shisha just looks spent not burnt - I love this place. mushrat
Its the silly ass huge holes you guys think you need for the Phunnel and Tangiers. I use just the very tip of a toothpick...control depth with the tip of my singer, and I get no ash or ashy taste and the tobacco never touches the coals. Some of the pictures you guys post of the holes you make are bigger than the crappy SCREENS I have.just my .
AKammenzind
Yeah, ash the coals more often, and maybe poke smaller holes. If you're stuck, try using some 18-20ga wire (anything but galvy) or some of those corn cob holders to poke holes instead of toothpicks.
mushrat
even smaller use the twist tie off a bread loaf...strip some of the plastic off. Or a pin. I use that method for one customer who like his holes extra small.I find the tip of a tooth pick to be small enough.

barrenwizard
Wow! I guess its best if we actually post PICS of how we are making holes for our BOWLS or FUNNELS.Yea, one more thing, its irrelevant from this topic. This FUNNEL thingy. The one with just ONE hole in the middle. Does Khalil Mamoon sell one of those?

I'm a KM fanboi, but what would be the advantage to them making one. I don't think the bowls that come with KMs are made by them, I'm sure they are just cheap egyptian bowls provided by the retailer. Stuie
Never heard of them doing it before. Phunnels seem to be isolated to the states at the moment.

mattarios2
Hmm when I did little holes tangiers was good for 30 min then got real harsh. So i tried doing alot and I mean alot of big big holes, and it was perfect, tasted amazing, had incredibly easy pull, and for the first time after adding a second round of coals, it still tasted great. I will try a ton of tiny holes and see how that goes. Maybe before I just wasn't putting enough tiny holes so the juice was clogging the holes up and making it harsh.
