Hookah End Table

Recommended Posts

so for a while now i've wanted to take a small coffee table and build a hookah into it. finally a few weeks ago i was driving with my gf on trash day and saw the perfect end table for it, so i snatched it up and brought it home. now i've got it in my parents garage(where the tools are) and i'm hoping to make this during the course of the upcoming week in my free time in the evenings while i'm home until college starts.

i took out the glass top and dont plan on using it at all because even if i drilled it to fit a hookah it would break if a coal landed on it by accident anyway. i would like suggestions on how you all would do it so i can make sure i dont miss anything while i'm at this

my goal is to find a large glass vase/jar to put in the bottom and then either drill my hoses with a glass bit into the jar, or buy a stem and attatch that to the jar. i want to build a large ash catcher in flush with the top of the table and then fill the rest of the square with wood probably(i might use marble since i have a large leftover slab from doing a counter top job a while back. how would coal affect that if it landed on it?

i figure i'll build small hooks on each side of the table to rest hoses on and use autoseal so i can make it a 4-hose hookah. wether or not i buy a stem i will attach a pipe to the top to make it taller and then buy an ice chamber. this would give me a small ash catcher at the very top, and a larger one flush with the table.

i've attached some pictures of the table with my hookah in the middle(mostly just so my dog wont knock it over) but please shoot me some suggestions and i'll continue to post pictures of the process throughout the week.

i also want to build in a coal holder somewhere but am not sure where to put that on it at all.

side note: no knocker the coors light!

I think if you make a plastic box to encase the abse for added stability that would be enough to prevent people from breaking it by knocking into it. Sink the bottom of the table. i.e cut out a square or circle and sink that part about an inch. On the sqaure/circle put a rotating plate like you find in alot fo resturants but smalled. That would allow for a one hose to easily be passed around a circle. If you wanted your hose to lay mesh with the table drilling into on of the corners would suffice if you intend on the whole table to spin, if its going to be stationary and you put the spinning plate on the bottom you could get a high strength plastic to use as a table top. On the top leave a circle cut out, this would allow for the hose to glide around the table when being passed. as for a coal holder, it depends on where you would like it to be. Could add a tray to lay flush with the top of the table, could put a basket integrated into the legs, or you could integrate it into the bottom next to where the hookah goes.

Maybe a little bit more info on what you are looking to do will help me help you =)
Ive been meaning to construct one of my own, a smaller version of it, but i dont have the time to do so right now.

well i intended to sink whatever i use for vase into the bottom of the coffee table, but there is not need to make anything spin. with it being 4 hoses i 1)dont see the point of a spinning hookah and 2) the way the hoses come out from under the table actually works great and isnt constricting to smoking at all

I've got plans to make a much smaller version of what you're making but just as a "stand" for my qt I'm planning on buying. I'm going to take a thick wooden base about 1-1.5 ft in diameter with a recess for the base and build up some siding in an artistic way. I'm thinking of burning or staining thew wood for effect and would also like to throw some hooks up for hose holding. Thanks for that idea. Def post some pics to show yer handiwork.

the problem with glass is that if a coal lands on it by accident then its going to shatter... so i have to nix that idea. i did find an AWESOME DOG BOWL to use as my second extra large ash catcher to sit flush with the table. its actually large enough i think i can put my extra burning coals in it as well, if not i'll find a second smaller one... do you guys the the coals would be ok in a small metal bowl flush with the table, or would it heat the metal too much and affect the wood?
i'll post a picture of the dog bowl tonight along with a rough idea of how the hookah will set in it

I did this earlier and learned some interesting things from it.

My table was a solid wood piece on top, so I drilled a hole for the head to come through only, it was the perfect height.

I drilled 2 holes on either side of the table, so I could plug the hoses into the table to smoke.

I ripped apart 2 hoses and took the piece that goes into the hookah and ran 1/2" tubing from it and put it through the 2 holes in the table.

Now it looks like my hoses are just plugged into the table, people think it's wild.

A marble top would look really nice. If it's real marble, and it's 1/2inch or bigger, it'll take a lot of heat. A coal landing on it would be nothing.

However, marble is really porous. The marble will soak up a lot of smells and bacteria and can be hard to clean. But as long as you're not eating off it, it'll be okay.

The table is pretty cool. Not sure how an ice chamber would look above the table. If you could rig it under the table it could maybe cool the marble? Probably a stretch, but maybe. I like the hook ideas for the hoses. Is the table solid wood? Perhaps a new coat of stain?

the table is solid wood, i will def. be giving it a new stain job before its all finished.

i've also decided that rather than put in hooks to rest the hoses on i'm going to drill 4 angles holes into the top of the table that the hoses just rest in. i think it will look cooler and be easier to grab.

also for the coal tray thats flush with the table i realized that i'm going to hold it in via magnets. this will allow me to easily remove it for cleaning, as well giving me easy access to the vase for cleaning/setting up. i

'm hoping to start on it tonight, but today i'm running new cable throughout my parents house for them... i'm dropping a cable line in EVERY wall of the house... this is going to suck

thanks for all the ideas/support. i really like the idea of plugging the hoses right into the table, may look into that.

hokay.... so i bought some clear hose today to run from the hookah to the supports on the table. going to drill into the table and put 45degree connectors in it to plug the hose into. also bought one of the walgreens $10 burners today... may get frisky and build a side attactment for that.... probably not, but you never know. i'm in indy right now but will start on this project sunday night hardcore... will take pictures as i do it.... should be finished in a week tops.

Damn, sick project. I wish you the best of luck, because it certainly seems like its going to be cheaper than buying one, and also way cooler with coal-holders and those other added functions you mentioned.

  • 2 weeks later...
okay... here are a few major updates for you kids...

originally i was going to adapt one of my mya's into this table... i have now decided to go ahead and completely build a hookah from scratch... at least for the most part...

below are pictures of the hose 'outlets' i have drilled and placed in each corner of the table, as well as the piece i believe i will use as the vase. i saw these glass vases the other day at big lots and fell in love!

still open to suggestions and ideas as always... i'm just slowing down a little bit on this project since i'm doing it from scratch so that i can make sure i do it right

and just for good measure.. theres a picture of me in a cowboy hat at holiday world Edited by OneMoreYouth

ok... heres a big update with lots of fun pictures...

to answer a question though... those vases are around 11 inces tall. they are BEASTLY i'll be picking at least one up next time i'm at that store.

i've got a lot of pictures... so i'll probably have to put up a few replies to load them all

the first one is of me adding the first layer of wood to the table

my initial cuts around the screws already holding the table together were a LITTLE off.. so i had to recut them.. it was a bitch since i only had a table saw at the time

i screwed this 3/4" piece of wood UNDER the table top. i have some good blue filler board that i'll put over that, and then use granite/stone/tiling to fit in flush with the bevel on the table itself where the glass originally went

my old man couldnt help but get a little excited and help out... which is cool since he taught me everything i know about handyman work... this is him cutting the hole for the stem to go through, as well as a round cut for my dog dish/coal holder to sit in.

now i needed a way to run a hose from the stem in the middle of the table to the nipples i had drilled into the four corners of the table... then i remembered that i had an old rusted hose... so i took it...

cut off the wood piece that i needed that was made to go into the stem

cut the appropriate amount of hosing thats pictures earlier in this thread..... and after heating the tubing with a hair dryer for a couple of minutes ended up with a perfect air tight seal!

then i took the hose and heated the other end so it would stretch enough to fit around the chrome nipple on the table
