  1. 1. When you pack tangiers you pros how high do you pack

    • 1/8 of an inch below the edge of the bowl
      6
    • right up to the edge, not above or below
      10
    • 1/8 inch above the edge of the bowl
      21

I have been having weird issues lately so I am trying to re-group and change my style if need be. I miss the sweet luscious thick smoke.

I have re-read through the tangiers wiki, and all the different techniques. Some seem to have it a bit above, some below, and some to the edge. I am just curious as to what height you guys pack it at. I was specifically looking at rayvers style and it looks like it is a little bit maybe 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch below the bowl and that is what got me thinking. Then i read a post that eric posted and he said not to let the tangiers touch the foil anymore and to disregard the old packing style. So I think tonight I am gonna try to pack tangiers a little below the edge of the bowl and see how it goes, but I wanted to see everyone else's opinion on the matter first.

Thanks guys.

i pack right at the rim of the bowl but thats after packing it down a little

go ahead and flame away people but i always get a good bowl so it works for me and im not going to try a different way if im not having any problems

so it is a tiny bit above the bowl then you lightly press it down so it is perfectly even with the height of the bowl?

Also is it like this towards the middle of the bowl, like right around the hole in the middle?

I tried packing it 1/8 above the bowl and then pushing it down slightly so it is a hair below the edge of the bowl, and it was frigggin perfect. Could not ask for a better smoke. Thanks guys, I am back to smoking Tangiers flawlessly. For some reason my "old" method of packing way over the edge stopped working, I have no idea why.

I have to change things up once in a while also for Tangiers. Weather makes a huge difference. Glad to hear it worked out for you!! Hookah.gif

That is how I pack it all the time now, and the hole pattern or size of holes are the only thing you will have to change. In winter I need the big holes I make with the meat skewer that is in my video, and now I am just using toothpick sized holes with 3 rings around the phunnel.

Thats good to know, thanks man.

I didn't even poke the holes all the way down the bowl b/c i was at a friends and didn't have anything thin and long enough, and it ripped great for 2 rounds of coals and still had another round or so left in her.

So I guess the overpacking thing with tangiers was all a myth? Or was that w/ the older stuff? B/c when I first bought this stuff a ways back it wouldn't smoke unless I overpacked it so the foil was touching. Now I am told to underpack and it works great.

here's how i do it.
http://www.hookahforum.com/?showtopic=23360

you werent "packing" or compressing the shisha enough. that is why it worked when you pushed hard.

Not quite. The reason I was having an issue was because i got carried away with the overpacking and had it like 1/4 of an inch over the bowl and would just stuff it and wrap foil over it. I was always under the impression you had to overpack the shit out of it. But you don't! My method used to work well then it randomly stopped working. So I had to do what I had to do and step it up!!

I pack it about 1/2" over the bowl and havent ever had the problem of harshness. That's my method.

well then, it is still working for you. That is what I used to do, but lately after 30-40 min it would start to get real harsh, I tried it with underpacking and it ripped incredibly smooth.

How many coals did you use? Is it a medium or a small? Did you use ice in the base? If so how much? What hole pattern did you use?

It seems every OTHER time I smoke Tangiers it's amazing. But every other time it's absolutely horrible.

Your new method. The new one you just did - packing it 1/8th over and packing it slightly below the edge of the bowl.
