Questions About Medium Funnel

Recommended Posts

I know this topic has been posted a listless number of times and I do search to get help, but it didnt help me too much.

I have a medium funnel with no mod. and it seems about an hour or so into it, the bowl starts to get harsh. i know its not my heat management. ( i was done smoking at the time so i lifted up the foil and saw about 50% of the shisha still un used.. )

Just wondering if a scali mod will help use the shisha that seems to not get cooked?!

Well I do not own a phunnel however I have done some research on phunnels and it seems that using a scalli mod will decrease the amount of shisha that is used while smoking. Using less shisha you will have a lesser amount uncooked. From my understanding the scalli mod will not help cook the rest of your shisha simply reduce the amount needed to fill the bowl.

It dies use less but doesn't the mod also allow the heat to travel down through all the shisha to the mods small openings on the bottom and up and in to the funnels top?

I have a scalli mod, and I honestly think it doesn't add to the experience at all. In fact, I find it makes the session a little worse than not using it at all. I just don't like it that much. The only reason to use a Scalli mod, imho, is if you want to conserve shisha... because it does take up a considerable amount of space in the bowl, so you'll only use half as much shisha.

Getting your sessions to last long with lots of flavor is an art. These forums can give you guidance and ideas, but ultimately there is no "silver bullet" for all situations. You really do have to "wing it" and find what works best for you. A few things do help: a quality hookah with good airflow, a wide hose, a phunnel bowl, and quality coals.

If I had to guess, I'm guessing that when you remove the foil, you have burnt shisha on top, but wet shisha on the bottom after an hour? This shouldn't be happening.

For me, lately I've been using a method that works very well for me. I have a small phunnel, and I smoke wet shishas. My faves these days are Potion and AF. What I do is I make three rings of small, toothpick sized holes. Two full rings around the edge that are fairly close together and one sparse ring of five holes around the main hole, like so...

I didn't draw all the holes because I have a life, but you get the picture. I use three cocos, like so...

After it gets warm and I start getting smoke, I take very short, hard pulls. Before taking another pull, I purge and then take another short, hard pull. This seems to get me huge, flavorful clouds. It allows just enough heat to build up for one second, to get good clouds.... but it cools down before your shisha heats up too much. Then you purge and your shisha is ready for another pull. I rotate the cocos every five mins or so to prevent any one spot from getting too hot. With this method, I can go through 2 sets of 3 cocos for a few hours and never get bad smoke. Full, flavorful, vaporous, face-hiding smoke! When I take the foil off, the top layer of shisha is blackened and crisp, but the bottom layer is fairly dry, too. To me, this is the sign of a successful session.

I've watched all the vids from snoopy, voski, codename067 and others, and for me, the holes they use are too big. As you can see... your mileage may vary. It really is an art and a very individual one at that. Just my 2 cents.

A windcover seems to work best for me. I'll use a windcover for the first few minutes and then remove it. If the smoke ever starts to lose its thickness, I either light new coals or throw on the windcover. I find if my coals are dying out, the smoke will get thin and harsh no matter what. Because the phunnel bowls are really tall, I lay a set of tongs flat on the coal/ash tray. Then I put the windcover on top. Give it a shot.

IF you're using a medium phunnel and stop smoking after 1hr then you're nowhere near finishing. That size funnel could go for like 3 or 4 sets of coco naras.

+1000

I can get 4 sets of cocos on a medium phunnel...almost 6 hours of smoking!

On my small 3-4 hours easy.

Also depends on the shisha. but 1 hour is FAR from done smoking on that bowl.

try to pack the tobacco a little less dense the more fluffy it is in the bowl the better the chance of heating getting to the bottom and if youre using a hole in the middle try a smaller one try increasing the heat as time goes by

in my experiences you are either, A ) Packing too much shisha and it burns well but then it becomes charred, and sticks to the foil, causing bad air flow and the burning of burnt shisha. Or B ) Holes are too small/not enough of them.

In my experiences those are the 2 things to check if it becomes nasty after an hour or so.
