Hookah Problems

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a new hookah for me and my friends, maybe a 5 days ago... I started using it and my problem is that i cant make big clouds of smoke and its not very thick or dense at all, smoke does come out but not in big amounts as most people get. I tried putting two coals in it, instant light ones and I felt so horrible because it tasted horrible... what am i doing wrong and how can i solve it. I really want to get big smoke...

Pics will be able to help us more.

First, is it a 1 or multihose hookah? If its a multi hose, do you know if it is an auto seal? If its not an autoseal, make sure everyone is plugging their hoses when some one is hitting.

Second, what kind of shisha are you using? When loading your bowl, you dont want to pack the shisha, just fluff it in. Also dont use a screen, use foil.

Make sure your hookah is airtight

sorry for not giving details... It is a single hose hookah and it has the plastic thing (i think its called gromet) in both the hose and the bowl... It is a hookah that i bought in some tabacco store, dosent really have a brand. I dont live in the US so i really cant get a brand one but im sure its fine... the tabacco i use dosent really have a visable name it jusr says Nakhla tabacco and the flavor. ive seen various videos and tricks but it really dosent give up much smoke, if u need more info just tell me

Nakhla is the brand of tobacco and I smoke it alot, you should be able to get thick clouds from it. Try using 2 coals, but keep them on the edges and not the center of the bowl. Also, if you dont inhale anymore after you take the hit, the smoke is thicker.

it seems that the OP has tried smoking with 2 instant light coals and that was too much heat. Try 1 1/2 coals on the bowl, it may bring the shisha to the temperature needed for thicker smoke and try putting some ice in the base but be careful as you could break the base if the temperature change is too much. If you dont want to put ice in the base put the stem in the freezer for about 10-15 min.

If you use ice in your hookah vase you'll get more smoke.

Also if you chill the stem you will get more smoke.

However, if you do these things, what you gain in smoke you lose in thickness.

Try to use natural coals rather than QL's. I've had much better sessions using natural wood coals.

Since your new, this is common. We all used to have dookie sessions at the beginning.

Watch some videos on packing bowls on youtube, or if you have a friend who is a pro make sure you ask him to show you.

Since it's a new hookah it usually takes some time to break it in.

Also a phunnel bowl helps, especially when you just start. Go to the do it yourself section and search "Phaking The Phunnel" Try that.

Check for leaks: Take off the bowl, plug the top with your finger. and suck.

Distribute your heat evenly.

What brand coal are you using? Of the quicklights, I use Golden or 3Kings, both in 40mm, broken in half, using three halves spaced evenly around the bowl. I usually use exoticas, broken into fourths, 3 at a time.

I second the recommendation for Al Fahker. I find it is easier to smoke than Nakhla. And tough some may not like the taste, it is really hard to over-burn Starbuzz.

And this is where I differ from a lot of people here, I never let the tobacco touch the foil. My lungs are more sensitive than most (a host of childhood respiratory ailments, a year of working in a warehouse heated by diesel smudge pots, and an unfortunate accident involving a pallet full of benzene and other corrosive chemicals)
and whenever the shisha burns and sticks to the top, it sends me away, coughing and choking. I may also have a nicotine allergy, as I can only smoke washed brands.

Are you using foil or a screen? I find foil is much easier. One layer, of standard kitchen foil or hookah foil, with evenly distributed hole made by the poker on my tongs (After I sharpened it). The only screen I use is the one that comes with the covered combo bowl.

And for the future, I do recommend a phunnel bowl with mod. While it is not essential, I find it does give me a longer, more flavorful smoke while using less tobacco.

I think he means have you tried smoking again with the advice you've been given so far. I would say, pack the tobacco in the bowl relatively tight up to the top, but still loosely enough that you can easily get air through the bowl. Use the same amount of heat. Use small holes, thumb tack sized holes throughout the bowl. You should get some pretty thick, tasty clouds.
