Getting Ill From Af

Recommended Posts

OK, what the smeg am I doing wrong here... I have tried 2 different flavors of AF, cinnamon and grape, and both have been void of flavor and made me ill. (headache and nausea)

I have smoked other brands before and not run across this. I must say that they were both 50g packs and somewhat drier than I expected.

For reference I have used several different hookahs (mini Mya, 26" Egyptian, and QT) with both a regular clay bowl and a Tangiers Phunnel. My usual coal is 3 pieces of Exotica, broken into 1/4.

Any help would be appreciated.

Always smoke after eating, usually while drinking liquid, and I do try to remember to breathe oxygen. Like I said before, it only happens with AF. I just haven't been able to figure out why yet.

Bulldog: How much heat do you suggest? At 3 pieces, I only get the faintest trace of flavor.

If you're getting a ton of smoke and little flavor, you're using too much heat, that's the point I was trying to articulate. But with the medium phunnel, that amount makes sense. I would suggest a thorough cleaning, check if everything is air tight, and make sure your water level is 1-1.5 inches above the bottom of the stem. See if that helps.

Okay I am a noob so take this for what it is worth but: in my limited experience, AF in 50g packs is much dryer and not nearly as good as AF in 250g tubs.

I have a 250g tub of AF cinammon and it is very, very juicy - I packed my bowl the other night and let it stand for about two minutes while I lit a coal, and when I came back some juice had run through the holes down the neck of the bowl and on to the counter. That's how juicy the stuff is. So if yours was dry there is definitely something different going on.

The other 250g tub of AF I have, which is lemon, is also very juicy. But the 50g packs of AF I have tried, in about half a dozen flavors, are just not as juicy and don't give the same big flavor when I smoke them. It's not a coincidence, I think, that the cinammon and lemon are may favorite flavors, and the only flavors I have tried in 250g tubs.

If it is a legit AF 50 g box the fact that it could be dry probably caused more exposure to nicotine. I know that if you smoke something that is dry you tend to get a higher buzz because you are that much closer to burning the shisha (roasting it at a higher heat level). I am only saying this from experiencing a very bad nicotine over dose with Nakhla and although it is Unwashed unlike AF it was dry and I have been smoking Nakhla consistently for a while now so it wasnt like I was just trying it. Anyway another question...when was the last time you smoked? if you havnt smoked in a while along with dryer than normal shisha that could just be a nicotine over dose. Hope that helps

Ok folks, here's an update. I took Bulldogs' suggestion and tried it with 2 pieces of coal (1/4 sized Exoticas)... pretty much nothing happened. So I added a wind cover to bump up the heat and I started to get some taste, but not much. I did not get sick this time though.

Having done some more thinking and brainstorming, I'm going to chock it up to bad AF and too much CO2 coming off of the coals. (I bought the shisha last year I think, so I can't get you box pics. However the grape did smell like ketchup...)

Next time I order some AF, I'll be sure to get a 250 tub and see if that makes a difference. I know it does with Al Waha. The 50g boxes are always dry as hell.

Thanks again!

it might be the exoticas any time i have used them i have gotten sick except for when i took like 3 hits off of nubbs' hookah

I think that they give off more carbon than the Japs I was using before. Of course, I'm talking out of my arse here...
