E.G.
FYI, an article in a student mag I get prompted me to find this (I didn't look up the original article. Maybe if I get some time over the weekend...): Avoid the hookah and save your teeth Study provides convincing evidence that tobacco smoking is a risk factor for periodontal disease. These findings included water pipe smoking. Chicago – Smoking a hookah also known as a water pipe is becoming an increasingly trendy menu item in Mediterranean restaurants, cafes and bars. People should be warned to "skip this course" according to a study that appeared in the November issue of the Journal of Periodontology. Researchers found that the impact of water pipe smoking is largely the same magnitude as that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence of periodontal diseases was 30 percent in water pipe smokers, 24 percent in cigarette smokers and eight percent in non-smokers. "Research from this study shows that the relative risk for periodontal disease increased by 5-fold in water pipe and 3.8-fold in cigarette smokers compared to non-smokers," said Kenneth A. Krebs, DMD and AAP president. "Even though the smoke is filtered out by water, inhalation of toxic substances is similar to or even greater than that of cigarette smoking." "Many people are mislead in believing that water filters out the toxins and that nicotine is reduced in water pipe smoking," Krebs. "Not only does water pipe smoking include the same substances as cigarette smoke such as carbon monoxide and tar, tobacco used for water pipe smoking contains two to four percent nicotine verses one to three percent for cigarettes." Researchers found increased levels of nicotine and cotinine in plasma, saliva and urine, supporting that water pipe smoking affects the periodontal tissues in the same way as cigarette smoking. "This study provides convincing evidence supporting the role of tobacco smoking as a risk factor for periodontal disease," said Krebs. "Although the precise mechanisms of action of tobacco smoke are not well understood, it seems highly likely that the periodontal bone is one of the most susceptible tissues," said Krebs. "This hypothesis will be further tested by investigating the periodontal bone height levels of various tobacco smokers in the presently studied population." yashman19
Thanks for posting this article, even though its not really telling me anything new... Smoking anything has negatives, teeth damage included. They're just making a big stink about the hookah because its new to them.
jmexx
Seriously, I mean we all know that smoking the hookah isn't healthy but sometimes these people who write the articles who "include" hookah smoking are just annoying. In many different studies that I've read, the way they test the smoke is rarely with the water filtration nor is it with a coal of any sort. They don't have a prepared hookah and create tests. Normally they take samples of tobacco and using all sorts of different techniques, they'll burn the tobacco and take what they got from that. It's a good find nonetheless, but right now it's just becoming a nussance having these people write up arguments without literal facts.Smoking anything is bad for you, anything have to do with combustion and lungs=bad.Jon
Sonthert
Reuters, AP-December 19, 2006:The Real Dangers of Hookah Smoking-Daniel K. Heram, Atlanta Free Herald"A new trend has swept this country from the smoky, crime-filled back rooms of Turkish Baths. Smoking a water-pipe, also known as a hookah or nargilea, has become a new trend with the youth of America. Health experts from all over the country met in Baltimore, MD and shared research at the Federal Laboratories at Quantico. The experts released the following information regarding smoking the nargeliea:'It contains carbon monoxide and that can kill you.It is strongly addictive, smokers of water-pipes are all addicts. It causes heart and lung disease.'These basic facts were revealed by Dr. Kenneth R. Rubberman, from the University of Ohio. Additional information was relayed from Dr. C.V. Arpinski from MIT through Dr. May Blow-Cox, also from MIT. Smoking the naergile will cause sterility in men and women: 72% of all men and women smoking water pipes reported reproductive problems. Second-hand smoke from Nargeelae is, due to a 450% increase in canco-toxic chemicals, is far more likely to kill as second-hand smoke. Dr. Arpinski's study, sponsored by Marlboro's 'Stop Youth Smoking' Campaign. In conjunction with Dr. Raj Mooj Rakastani, of the Indian Royal Academy for Science, Dr. Arpinski was able to accurately determine that second-hand anrgelie smoke is responsible for 69,000,000 deaths each year. Chemcals in the class called sanctimo niuscrap are found in greater quantity in the smoke from naarggeellaa than from cigarettes and cigars combined. These chemicals, according to Dr. Pulling Y. Legg, are very likely responsibe for the rise of Nazi Germany, the outbreak of the Black Plague and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Dr. Sheba Wiseass, of the Institute for presumptuous and faulty scientific conclusions in New York, also implicated smoking in certain economic problems: similar to alcohol, smoking causes poverty and is a gateway drug to paints AND paint thinner. It has been shown that over 85% of criminal inmates of the New York Penal System smoke cigarettes or neargaela. Dr. Bigcash Grant further surmises that crime could be cut by that same 85% if smoking was made illegal. Dr. Grant undertook a fourteen-year, $38 million dollar study on the subject and also came up with incontrovertible evidence that "Smoking is Bad For You". Additionally, smoking has been linked with "Poor hairstyles, eating fast food and watching sit-coms on Fox". Dr. Shineon, of the University of Texas also reports thats studies have shown a positive link between smoking nirgela and cigarettes contributes to unexplaned outbreaks of cannibalism and Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC). Dr. Shineon is quoted as saying: 'Don't talk to smokers. Not only is the second-hand smoke going to kill you in 10-20 minutes, but you may not survive that long because the cigarette smoker may eat you whole! Additionally, since SHC is a real problem, standing near a smoker still may be fatal if they suffer from SHC; people standing upto eight feet away could be injured or killed.'"If you haven't figured it out, this was bull. There are alot of "scientists" who get paid alot of money to study things with a predetermined conclusion in mind. I like to evaluate what they have to say and ask "is it reasonable?" Yes, alot of this crap is not based on literal facts. I suggest everyone run out and watch Penn N' Teller's "Bullsh*t" show, 1st season, the piece on the "Dangers of Second Hand Smoke" I couldn't put it any better than P&T. jmexx
Haha, I love it. Good job tang, I was laughing through most of the phrases. Obviously there are going to be people who want to stop this HORRID "habbit". I was talking about this with my local lounge owner and we were saying, if it were such a habbit you would see people busting out hookahs in the middle of the street to get their "fix". I mean, I do enjoy smoking shisha a fair amount but I could go a week or whatever without it. I just find it so irritating that people are doing this. They're figuring that teens aren't investing in their money-making cigarettes (we all know the government makes a ridiculous amount of profit through cigarettes and from sponsors for non-smoking campaigns, whatever,) while this ma'assel stuff gets sold under the table or through tax-free ways (at least that's how it works here.)Grrr... I'm so mad I need to enjoy some Caramel Apple from AAJon
