How much coal for this hookah?

Recommended Posts

http://numbheartphoto.com/hookah/burn.jpgTheres a picture to the top of my hookah. I can't figure out how many coals I should use on this thing. When I start with just one I don't get as much smoke or flavor. I've been starting with 2 lately and switching to 1 new one about 45 minutes in.. I get a lot more smoke and flavor that way but the top of my bowl is just so small.. I don't know what I should try.

Do exactly what you have been doing...If there isn't enough smoke, add
more heat. If it gets too harsh, take some heat off. Also, make sure
you arn't just setting the coals on the bowl and leaving them. About
every 5-10 minutes, you should ash the coals in the tray, and put the
coals back on, but in a different spot. You should rotate your coals
around the bowl evenly, to make sure you use all of the tobacco.

Hmm, upon further inspection of your picture, I'm not sure. Most of the
things I said are still true, that you need to ash your coals and
rotate them, but I'm not really the best at using screens. I'm a foil
guy most of the time.

There might be more tips and tricks for using a screen. Try using the
forum "search" function and type in "screen". You should get a couple
good threads on it.

Well, you can try breaking the coals in half, using 3 halves so you may not have to remove any part way through. Other than that sound slike you have a good personal system going....why worry.

Yeah, I ash them about every 5-10 minutes and rotate them a few degrees in circles then after a complete circle I'll put the largest one left in the center.. I'm  going to go back to foil.. The screen is easier since you just put it on and thats it but I think the screen they gave me is too small.. Theres the large circle open around the outside of the screen when on the bowl.. Dunno if you can see it in that picture. When using the screen my shisha burns onto the botton no matter what I try : Its not even near the top of the screen when I put it on, I make sure the shisha is low enough.. but it always ends burnt to the top..I also can't get this al amir grape smell off the screen for days now..

You're using the chinese bowl, right? Use foil, that's your main problem. You should be getting enough smoke with one coal (is that a 3king?) and again if you're not, don't go straight to 2, cut one in half and add it on. What I used to do when I used 2 coals, I would use one for about 15 minutes then add the second one. After I would just dump the smaller one after 30 minutes of use and continue like that. Don't ask why but it worked!I suggest keeping to one coal, though, just from experience. If your bowl and hookah is prepared properly (enough water, etc.) then you shouldn't need to add a second coal, which burns your tobacco quicker.Just a thought!Jon

there are two methods i generally use-

one is for quick gratification, and that is taking one and a half
coals smashing them to tiny chunks and pouring them on a pile onto the
bowl. This brings alot of heat and will burn up the bowl pretty fast
(sometimes gets too harsh) but will weild a sh*tload of smoke.

the second one is taking 2 charcoals and rotating them in circles
around the bowl so yuo can hear the massel cook. sometimes i place them
under a fan before i put them on the bowl, but i keep them on the edge,
with about 1/4 hanging off the bowl. i just keep working them around
get a nice even smoke

try both these methods, from the looks of the picture you should try the first method first.
I need a new bowl, you can't tell by those pictures but
the other night my kitten broke the bowl into over 20 pieces..I super glowed it back together >< no leaks atleast rofl
Wait, so you're saying that you are using a bowl which has been
super-glued back together? Ouf of all the chemicals people worry about,
whether it be from a vinyl hose or aluminum in the foil, I think this
is the worst idea, and has the most risk...

Now I don't know what type of glue you used, but it seems like it
really wouldn't matter. I'd be worried about your coals getting the
glue hot again, and giving off some bad chems that you will be inhaling.

I broke a bowl in the past and also glued it back together. Then with
the bowl in my hand, I just thought about what I was doing, and tossed
it in the trash.. But then again, I was using a really harsh super glue.

Heh yeah I thought about that.. tried it for a few days now and theres no glue like fumes or anything it seems. Either way, socialsmoke sent me a new bowl and its coming Tues.. this bowl didn't fit for some reason on this hookah using the grommets they provided.. Sent me a  care packaged of various gromments and a different type of bowl =)

Jon
Evil! Oh, boy! I am sawing off a little girl's leg right now. We use real children in the mixture! Its the secret for us having a "leg up" on the competition! Its not a warehouse, just cause there's 13' ceilings! Jeez! Actually, I'm not sawing her leg "off", I'm looking at it. She's not really a girl, she's full grown and I'm not really sawing...propriety prevents me from continuing at this point.
