Beer And Hookah Pairings

Recommended Posts

so one of my other passions besides hookah is beer tastings... i used to host a weekly one in cincinnati and have travelled to a lot of beer festivals/breweries

i've been thinking about trying to pair up some of my shisha sessions with some of the beer i have in my cellar... like maybe some simple double apple or orange with a 90 minute IPA from dogfish head or something....

anywho... let me know what you all think, and if your serious tasters

Screw tasting..I'm a serious beer Drinker...

I often suggest beers to go with flavours of shisha at the bar. I try to match up Wheat beers with Citrus flavours. Stouts and porters with SB Irish Cream. Belgians with fruit shishas, that sort of thing..If you want specific beers, I'll have to go back and look at my menu.

Well, I haven't done this much but I'm wanting to try a few combos, mainly: Stockyard Oatmeal Stout with Tangiers Cocoa, Kennebunkport Blueberry Wheat ale with AF G Esk Apple, and Stone IPA with Tangiers K-Peach...And Arrogant Bastard ale (strong as hell) with some nilla-mint to balance it out.

I had some Sam Adams Cherry Wheat with Nakhla lemon (blech), and the 2 flavs blended very nicely, complementing eachother, but as I can't stand Nakhla I think I would love this with a better lemon baccy.

I'm sure there are more but this is off the top of my head.

mmm, beer and shisha...
I prefer hoegaarden with any fruit shisha, especially orange and lemon flavors
Otherwise I go with stella artois, Duvel, Hommelbier or Desperados (all Belgian beers except Desperados)

Chimay is great paired with everything.

My favorite place to look for beer is BevMo. I love looking through their micro brews and finding something totally unique.

I enjoy Red Stripe with any shisha, I use it as my goto and as a benchmark for comparing how other beers compliment the shisha. I enjoy pale ales with non-fruity flavors because it gives a crispness to the flavor. I like more earthy notes when I'm smoking something fruity because it adds a contrast the the already bright flavors (i.e. Newcastle w/ AF Watermelon)

I makes my own beer - so it all goes well with smoking.

But seriously - altbier (which you absolutely can not find anywhere - ok it's one of the most difficult beers to find anywhere that doesn't import lots of german beers) - alt goes with just about ANYTHING.

I would imagine that any malty beverage (brown, porter, etc) goes well with most tobacco, however the darker you go, the less it would likely work with fruit.

If you want interesting - mint/vanilla with porters and stouts are probably the best combo ever.

WTF are you talking about, I find it hard to believe that someone can't find an ALT. But anyway, I have been rocking IPA's with strawberry. I love it, any IPA willl do. I was wondering about sour beers with shisha though. WTF would go with a Flemish Red? drinks.gif

Hello fello zymergist! It's difficult to find because MOST microbrew houses stay far away from Alt as a style. I, personally, think it's one of the best styles out there. I have a big malty arse alt, and a slightly more normal alt. I've also done a a nice Sticke "double" alt of just over 8%.

But seriously - not many distributors and high class beer shops around seem to want to carry much in the way of alt, and it's all from one brewery in Dusseldorf - so even the stuff I can get there's no variation.

For sour beers - I would have to assume that a similar flavored shisha would do well - like something berry (raspberry, cherry, strawberry, mixed berry, etc) flavored with something like a framboise or kreik, and maybe something lemony/lemon-mint with something like a geuze or a berliner weisse. Since lemon and orange are kinda standard serving compliments of things like hefe's and wits - I would imagine you'd want to stick to those flavors of smoke when pairing.

I love Mich. Amber Bock with most of my berry shishas. Sweet Melon and Watermelon goes well with smoother beer like Blue Moon. Duvel is just too good to drink while smoking. I like Affligem to go with Peach flavors and the like because of it's lighter yet very tasty flavor.

I bought a 24oz of Chimay I was a bit skeptical of dropping 14 dollars on a beer. But wow, not after I polished it in 30 min. It was a great beer!

Yea, those Trappists Monks know how to make a good brew. Did you have the Red, the Blue, or the White?
