Roomates And Smoking

Alright, so I just moved into my apartment with 3 other guys I've never met in my life. I whipped out the hookah (in my room), with the door open, so the smell was getting out into the living room a little bit. They don't if they want me to smoke in the apartment, they seem pretty closed minded to hookah, thinking of it like smoking cigarettes. Anyone have experience with this?

That's one of those environments where you've gotta be respectful of those around you. Not everyone loves it or understands it as much. My advice would be to (pending you have one) smoke on your balcony for a bit. Over time they'll probably join you and then you can bring it back inside.

I know what you mean. I realize I'm living with the other dudes and compromises will have to be made. We don't have a balcony, and no where really to smoke outside. I just want them to be open to the idea. I would love for them to at least try it, but they seem pretty against the idea of smoking anything.

getting them open to it will be really tough. i suppose you should just talk to them about it, or just smoke in your room with the doors shut. If you have any hot friends, bring em over and have them smoke with you. classic condition the roomies to thing hookah=hotties...and you should be a-ok.

Haha, actually I have 2 girls over now and we're smoking in my room, I'm testing the waters to see if they notice it with the doors shut.

i'd talk to them and ask them if they'd be opposed to you smoking in your room with the door closed and a window open/some sort of ventilation. the worst thing they can do is say no, and then you'll just have to take it to friend's houses.

I just plop mine down on the coffee table and puff away in the living room. They look at me funny but that's about it. Maybe they're just jealous.

if you smoke, just do it in your room with the door closed and windows open. Buy a hotplate and stick it on top of you dresser

Hookah smells awesome 99.99% of the time. It's surprising they dont step up and try it. I'm with the hot chicks and hookah idea. That should make them rethink it a tad.

well my roomie doesnt mind, i was planing on going outside but here i dont have a balcony either and our entrance is in an alley/loading dock area (old warehouse that was converted). at home i dont even ask to smoke inside, my mother hates smoke of any kind so i just respect that and smoke out side. if you dont smoke often you wont have any smell left over much but if you do it every day your gona build up some smells.

the more respectful you are now the farther you can push it once in a while, just my 2 cents

that sounds like the place some of my friends tried to get in here in richmond, basically if you didnt get 4 people to go in they would assign people

I got lucky. My two room mates smoke with me regularly after I took them to a hookah bar downtown packed with blonde chicks. They smoked cigars anyway so it wasn't a hellacious jump. But yeah.

But one thing I've done to get new ppl to smoke with me is to buy some tangiers and let it acclimate. The smells were more than enough to pique any man's interest.

You can't make someone want to smoke. Yes, hookah is certainly less offensive than cigarettes, but some people still don't like smoke. Unfortunately, being a roommate means that sometimes you have to sacrifice a little of your personal comfort. I would sit down with them and talk about it rather than trying to go behind their backs constantly, otherwise it will just lead to tension at some point in the future. I would also recommend checking your lease to see what it says about smoking; many leases have a no smoking policy that could cost you a portion of your security deposit.

I bypassed the problem entirely and just moved in with my hookah-smoking buddies. I rarely smoke without at least one of them.

My roommate doesn't smoke anything and will not. He'll hang with us on the balcony if there is a bunch of us out there, but won't smoke. He doesn't want me smoking inside so I don't. I respect his feelings about it. I told him that I'm gonna smoke in my room when he's not around and if he ever can tell, then I won't do it again. I've done it a couple times and he hasn't said a thing. Most the time I smoke outside or go to the gf's to smoke inside, especially right now when it's still 90 degrees at night. AZ sucks!
