Breaking Coals

Ive read alot about people breaking coals and then putting them on the four corners of the bowl or a half on each side etc. But how do you go about doing this with out the coal just breaking into little pieces and crushing it.

before you light the coal, score the coal, break it in half, then score the halves and break in to quarters. i never really ever found quarters to be useful, so i always just use halves, so yeah...

honestly IMHO with QLs its pointless to break them up really, ive had friends that did it and frankly their hookah was never great (i think it was a combo of stuff though). for natruals sure, but QLs meh, i can see halves maybe if its touchy shisha but meh

but as to how, score with a knife (i like steak knives cause they are serrated well) and break, or you can just shove the poker of your tongs in the center of a coal but its not as controlled and can give 2,3,4 or more pieces

I use QLs and a phunnel bowl. I have to use halves. Tried using 2 whole coals and couldn't get any smoke.

I wait until my QLs are lit, then poke the center of the coal with the tongs poker - it usually splits into 2 or 3 pieces.

If you're breaking quicklights, you should just grab it with your thumbs and apply some force. Usually breaks in two halves.

i never break my QL's if not, i would use just one QL at a time... IMO it gives about the same smount of smoke as 2 QL's..
