Ma’assell reviews : Layalina, Al Waha

Recommended Posts

I didn't notice any other reviews for these when I searched the forum a week ago, so here goes:

I was using Nour coals for all of these. I really like the woodsy smell
the charcoals have when lighting them up. It's like having a campfire
without having to deal with bugs, sleeping in a tent, and so on.

Al Waha After Nine

This is a "chocolate mint" flavor, but it's much more mint than
chocolate. Out of the bag, it smells just like a bag of chocolate
mints, and for the first quarter of a smoking session, whaddayaknow, it
tastes like a chocolate mint. It's very strong and very nice, but the
chocolate flavor dies fairly quickly and for the most part you're left
with a mint flavor. This mint flavor, however, lasts the entire
session. A very nice smoke, but I tend to prefer fruity flavors. I'll
be sure to keep it around for a change of pace.

Al Waha Guava

I've got mixed opinions on this one. My girlfriend thinks it smells
like cat piss right out of the bag, and it indeed doesn't smell very
nice to me either. I've been drinking a whole lot of guava juice in the
past year, so perhaps I've gotten more used to the strange flavor of
guavas. The flavor isn't very strong, and it doesn't taste entirely
like guava, but I enjoy it. Just like Al Waha Cola, it has a light
flavor that lasts the entire session. I would suggest mixing it with
other fruity flavors, like Nakahla Double Apple or Peach. My girlfriend
refuses to smoke anymore, so I'm keeping it around for myself :)
Overall, I think it's a nice flavor, but your mileage may vary. I might
have gotten a bad batch, or guava might also experience some of the
problems that mango has: namely, that it tastes like crap when you try
to preserve it in tobacco form.

Layalina Coconut

I heard bad things about Al Waha Coconut, so I went along with a brand
I never heard of. The tobacco is red and syrupy, like Havana, and it
has very similar smoking characteristics. Namely, the flavor is strong
for a bit but dies out a little quickly. For that short bit, though,
it's excellent! It tastes very sweet and, well, just like coconuts. I
tried mixing it with the After Nine and another time with cappucino,
and each time the coconut flavor was overpowered. The After Nine,
though, really killed the coconut flavor, while the cappucino left a
little bit of it. I would suggest either smoking this alone if you
don't mind the flavor drop-off or mixing it with a subtle savory flavor
(cappucino, chocolate, etc.). A very good flavor, but a nice smoking
session might require some mixing.

I would be nice to see what other opinions people have for these
flavors / brands. I'm curious as to how the guava and coconut from
different brands shape up.

Nice reviews! I've been wanting to try Al Waha After Nine for a while now, and from what you described I think I'll like it a lot.You like the smell of Nours? I always get a headache if I'm around them when they're lighting.

Here are some al waha reviews

Al waha Apple
Not much to say on this one.  Starts out a little appley, but
flavor doesnt last to long.  The ma'assel starts to burn easy, so
you have to watch it.  Smoke decently thick, but nothing like
fumari or romman.  Not bad, but not great.
Overall: Mediocre

Al Waha Honey
Decent honey flavor at start, goes away half way through bowl.
Smoke not to thick.  Good by itself or mixed with apple.  I
like it, but it is the only honey i have had.
Overall: Decent

Al Waha 2 apple
I LOVE anise.  This was the first anise ma'assel i had.  I
liked the flavor, but i wish it had been much stronger.  I would
reccomend it for those who like some anise, but not to strong.
Only the smallest hint of apple flavor.
Overall: Good

I tried After Nine yesterday actually.

I was really disappointed.  I kept reading about how it tastes like a chocolate mint and all that.  Basically - I tasted mint.  If I wanted plain mint I would have smoked plain mint.  That box was a waste of money in my opinion.

You guys might be pretty happy with Nahkla's Mint-Chocolate flavor
then. The mint isn't too overpowering, and you can actually taste the
creaminess of the chocolate. Very top notch goods from nahkla I must
say. Only problem is, don't give it too much heat. If you get the bowl
burning, its hard to get it back under control...
