I am thinking it might be your holes. They might need to be a bit bigger. Bad airflow can kill shisha pretty fast. Might try making them slightly bigger.

Actually, im thinking too much heat. You are getting great smoke while you are burning the top layer of tobacco, then it's forming a burnt layer which is killing the smoke for the rest of the bowl. Have you changed coals or how you do your set up recently?

Yea, I'm gonna go with Mushrat. Generally when you use instalights and a wind screen you only need to use 1, 1.5 max. The screen traps so much heat and allows the tobacco to char alot more easily

I use a .5 mm mechanical pencil lead to poke my holes. They are extremely small, but I do put a good amount of them. I agree with the other posters, you are probably burning up the tobacco very fast. I'd suggest trying again, and when it dies out, unpack the bowl, leave it in the same condition as much as possible, take a picture, and post it here. We'll be able to diagnose the problem much easier by seeing it.

Also, I've noticed that Nakhla burns very nicely for a short time, then it gets too hot and dies out. Try using 2 coals for the first little while. Then at the first sign of charring/ashy taste, remove 1 coal, and rotate the other coal to a fresh position on the bowl. This should help.

i did this last night and it worked a charm. it needed the initial heat to get the smoke and i then removed one coal and smoked for a good 45min after that. thanks for the help guys
